Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Thunder and lightning

It's thunderstorm season around here.


From Understanding Lightning: Thunder:


 "If you count the number of seconds between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder, and then divide by 5, you'll get the distance in miles to the lightning: 5 seconds = 1 mile, 15 seconds = 3 miles, 0 seconds = very close."


I should add that I love thunderstorms. Exciting.

Understand that tells you about the CLOSEST part of the lightning. Cloud-to-cloud lightning can result in thunder that lasts VERY long.

I used to enjoy thunderstorms, too...and then I got a dog. They really upset her if they come during the night. If they happen in the daytime, she's agitated but not nearly as stressed as at night.

We've developed a regime for helping her (and us) get back to sleep, but it still takes the fun out of a storming evening.
