We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
When you stop and consider all the Indian trouble the French stirred up prior to the revolution getting kick started, they owed us. Those wars killed a lot of American Colonists. If the French wouldn’t have been such incompetent fools, their leadership in Quebec, constantly looking to line their pockets, this whole continent would look different. Alas, it’s the French.
My 8th grade teacher made this point to our class by reading to us for the first 10 minutes of the day from Mary P. Wells Smith's book, The Boy Captive of Old Deerfield. There is also a follow-up book, The Boy Captive in Canada, but it is not available in digital format.
Thanks for the book recommendation. I highly recommend Allan W. Eckert’s books about that era: The Frontiersman, Wilderness Empire, The Conqueror, and more.
A reflection on the Declaration of Independence from 98 years ago. If you are as old as I am you can remember Kate Smith singing this to sing off the Ed Sullivan show every night. That was America. We made a terrible mistake. perhaps beginning about 1960 but certainly by the 70's we began electing people who wanted to destroy our country and now they are fully in charge. I don't think we can "fix" it. We may not even try, we have grown weak and are so divided that the forces of evil will likely win. I do think this will end in violence, serious widespread violence. I do think that those who want the America that they grew up in really don't want that violence and that is what tempers their actions. But, as a result I think the violence will be worse as those who would end our republic grow stronger and more violent themselves. Too many good Americans will stand aside unwilling to fight for their country for fear of the very violence that is inevitable. We are nearing that precipice and it cannot be avoided. You have a decision to make.
I wish some everyday TV personality would choose to end their TV show every night with Kate Smith singing God Bless America. I miss it. It never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I find myself wondering did it make me cry when I was just a child? I know it made me proud, but did it make me cry back in the 50's? I know it would have if I could have seen what was coming...
