We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Oil changes, cars and boats

For a boat engines (outboard, gas inboard, or diesel), probably annually or every 100 hrs, whichever comes first. If you put your boat away for winter, change oil when it goes for storage, not in the Spring. Some opine every 200-250 hrs.

As my pickup uses about a quart of oil for every 10 gallons of gas burned, I just keep dumping oil in the crankcase.

My 2014 Kia Soul with the GDI engine started chugging oil around the 90k mark, and after a series of tests they did a short-block swap out on it. It was a known problem that started appearing about two years after it went into production. Supposedly I can go 5k miles between changes, and for about the first 60k the thing was pretty tight and didn't drink between 5k changes. Then it started to - and at about 80k it was a quart per 2k miles.

So the engine got rebuilt - and now I'm using high-mileage oil and changing it every 3k. Can't afford a new car, so I'll keep this one going as long as possible...

The key is to have a slow but steady leak and add oil as needed. I have a '98 F-150 that's a daily driver and rarely change the oil, every couple of years. I'm negligent so it gets a couple quarts low before I add more. 5w30 synthetic.

If I were more deligent I would probably change it every 30,000 miles.

Oil does not expire in 2-3 years. Much longer unless the manufacturers are adulteraring it to make it go bad.
