We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I love me some lightning bugs! Never saw them as a kid out on the West Coast; my first encounter was in a friend's back yard as as a young man in Omaha. What a thrill!

Ditto for my wife who lived her life in Southern California and saw them for the first time here in Nebraska. She was like a little kid in her joy and awe of the lightning bugs when she first saw them.
Cicadas have come and gone here. We get lightning bugs here but haven't seen any dragon flies yet. Chigers and ticks are a real nuisance, but the heat does control them.
At least you didn't say ticks. Was hiking last week in the Mid Atlantic and as a naive western boy decided against repellent....over course of 1/2 hour I picked up 15 of them on my legs.
