We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Boat checklist

I love the sea but I still maintain that any boat under the size of an ocean liner can make you feel trapped, clautrophobic. Of course, if your sailboat is in the Bermuda Race (which started yesterday), you are too busy to feel caged.

- Check marine weather forecast!
- Radio check
- GPS, radar, etc working
- Decide on an initial harbor-clearing course, then a course to destination with waypoints
- Generator working
- Coffee machine working
- Toilet working
- Water tank filled
- Plenty of diesel
- Beer in fridge, water bottles, Coke too
- snacks in galley
- Bilge free of water
- Check engine oil
- Waste water holding tank not full (I will not dump at sea, but many do)
- Anchor power working
- Inform any guests re safety rules
- Life jackets ok
- If overnights, bedding stuff etc.
- a few $10 and 20s for tipping gas docks, dockhands
- American marine flag up


What am I missing?

EPIRB - Satellite phone - Charts - Sun Screen - Sunglasses - Foul weather gear - tarp to rig up shade - life raft - emergency food - extra water - a bit of whiskey and wine - might be considered

I've only "seen" the Newport to Bermuda yacht race once, in (I think) 1973. I was in the Navy and assigned to a patrol squadron flying P-3 Orions, and we were deployed to Bermuda. We were tasked to fly over the race, find and photograph as many of the boats as possible, and report their positions. We found and photographed a lot of them.

Coming back to Bermuda, we formed up with another P-3 carrying a National Geographic photographer, who took several photos of our plane and of Bermuda.

One of those photos was a P-3 sort-of silhouetted against the island of Bermuda and the setting sun. It was the lead photo for the article about Bermuda, so if you were ever a NatGeo subscriber, you may have seen the photo. I'm in that plane; my one-and-only claim to fame.

It can be useful to have a jacket, sweater, sweatshirt or something for the evenings when things cool off and and dew forms on everything. Even in July.

Long sleeve tee-shirts are useful for avoiding sunburn, same with a cap that has an adequate sun deflector.

Eye glass cleaner and soft cloths to clean glasses.

Each time I go out, I check the horn, the bilge pump, the wipers, and the nav lights. That's because they are all on my panel.

Hey Aggie anytime u take a rope on a boat it becomes a line, but then it might become a sheet , or a halyard , or even a rode.

question on Mainship 34 pilot. what did you do to soundproof engine noise? How much was the dB drop? Looking at buying a 2002 single engine 370 HP Mainship thanks, dave
