Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Conserving wildlife in North America


No more Passenger Pigeons, nobut lots of sorts of North American critters are having comebacks in recent decades, often with human assistance.


A few examples: Wild Turkey, Bald Eagle, Osprey, White-Tailed Deer, Wolf, Mountain Lion, Grizzly Bear -and you can name others.

California condor- up from 27 birds to 600 plus, and recolonizing the Grand Canyon and Mexico.

River otters, Coyote, Foxes, Beavers, were all pretty scarce when I was a kid. And believe it or not, Canada Geese were in short supply at one time, now they're crapping all over everything near a body of water. And the deer, I was in Pittsburgh recently and saw two herds of deer. One was crossing Butler street in Lawrenceville neighborhood and the other herd was at the end of the 31st St bridge. Several nice bucks, right there near the center of the city. And black bears have been raiding the bird feed in Butler PA. Used to have to go the Alleghenies to find them. They're expanding rapidly.

Bluebirds, buffalo, fishers, sandhill cranes & swans (in Minnesota, lots of swans - nesting). Habitat is key. When wetlands, grasslands and woodlands are allowed to recover, especially in large tracts, some things come back. Not all, but some.

Nice big grizzly in the pasture next to us! Three mountain lions--mom and twins equal in size to her, probably one year old came right through our yard!

When we first moved into our current home, some 40 plus years ago, we saw a pheasant nesting in a neighbour's evergreen tree. It was a one-off, but we used to have Hungarian partridges scurry through our yard for many years.
We haven't seen the partridges for some years, but we do see bobcats and coyotes wander down the lane. Also seeing a lot more crows and magpies, which go after the robins and sparrows.
