Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re Death Of Self-Checkout, Walmart Charges For It In Some Location
Imagine paying Wal-Mart $98/yr to check out your own groceries. And Wal-Mart feels this will make customers less inclined to steal? Meanwhile, Dollar General has removed their self-checkout from my little town due to pilferage by the locals. They are so short of help in that store that there is often nobody up front by the cash register. They are practically inviting people to walk out of the store with merchandise. Yes, they have security cameras and yes, I am given to understand that some of the shoplifters will be prosecuted. Piggly Wiggly was the first self-service grocery store: "At the time of its founding, grocery stores did not allow customers to gather their goods. Instead, a customer would give a list of items to a clerk, who would then collect them throughout the store. This created greater costs and higher prices. Piggly Wiggly introduced the innovation of allowing customers to go through the store, gathering their goods, thus cutting costs and lowering prices. Losses due to easier shoplifting were more than offset by profits from increased impulse purchasing."
I think we will be heading back to the pre-Piggly Wiggly days sometime soon, but the modern version: You order online, and go and pick it up. No more "impulse buying" -- the prices to off set the cost of "impulse shoplifting" will go through the roof, otherwise. It's going to really suck, the future of retail. re Majority Of Germans Reject Muslim Immigration, Express Fear Of Becoming A "Minority In Germany"
They should have thought of this 50 years ago and voted accordingly. Can they save themselves from becoming a minority? Yes, I think they can but the hour is late and the solutions won't be pretty. Will they save themselves from becoming a minority? Your guess is as good as mine. " It's not that they don't know the truth, it's that they are deliberately lying."
A perfect summation of literally everything that is wrong in the 21st century. If the NYTimes reports it then it is a lie. If the government tells us something it is a lie. Literally every facet of government lies to us to get what they want and please one special interest group or another. The MSM spend most of it's time hiding the news they don't want you to know about and finding things to support the official narrative. The world is being slow walked into nuclear Armageddon and the MSM floods our news with sports or racism or LGQTB+ or "far right" whatever just so that we don't notice everything collapsing around us. It's all fake. The stock market/DOW is fake propped up with fake money and fake reporting. The economy is fake, lies and hidden data. The employment data is fake all the new jobs going to illegal immigrants and DEI. Inflation is at least twice the official rate and in some economic measures much higher. Banks are failing, our leaders and bureaucrats are lying and/or stuttering trying to explain simple things. Everyone that comes before congress lies and prevaricates because the truth cannot be said out loud. When Trump speaks truth the media responds "Trump is sounding like an idiot". We live in a time that is like the early stage of a tsunami where the ocean has drawn back from the beach and is about to come back in a massive destructive wave but our politicians are trying to convince us that they made the beach bigger for our enjoyment. It's over! The fat lady is in the wings clearing they/their throat. Kiss your family goodbye and pour yourself a drink. Babylon Bee presents Woke Jesus.

We finally traveled far enough down the 'enlightenment' trail to reach the point where the irrational and dysfunctional 'normies' are in charge of the current western insanity that will continue right up to the collapse. Then these 'normies' will again be institutionalized or marginalized in order to make survival possible.
Tyson Foods Warns Low-Income Consumers Are Cracking Under Inflation Storm
QUOTE: Tyson Foods, the second-largest producer of animal protein globally, plunged the most in one year after cautioning that heightened inflation is severely impacting its working poor customers, leading them to reduce their purchases of ready-to-eat products from its brands. This ominous warning comes one week after McDonald's and Starbucks warned that low-income consumers are starting to crack. https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/tyson-foods-warns-low-income-consumers-are-cracking-under-inflation Hoot of the Day: Belgium’s Ports Drowning Under Glut of Chinese EVs
QUOTE: Due to China’s overcapacity in production – as it aims to capture a quarter of the European electric vehicle market – the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge are inundated. . . . Imported vehicles are seriously piling up at European ports, turning them into “car parks.” Automakers are distributors are struggling with a slowdown in car sales as well as logistical bottlenecks that make it hard to alleviate the buildup of new, unsold vehicles. Some Chinese brand EVs had been sitting in European ports for up to 18 months, . . . “It’s chaos,” said another person who had been briefed on the situation. This is another part of the escalating trade war between China and the rest of the world. https://mishtalk.com/economics/hoot-of-the-day-belgiums-ports-drowning-under-glut-of-chinese-evs/ Deconstruction meant close reading. Derrida used it on systems that he loved, which produces quite a difference in intuition from what the academic left uses close reading for, namely destroying hated systems.
The lesson from Derrida is not that there's no truth but that truth isn't where you're looking for it. I always recommend guys start with the short book Spurs (thin, facing French and English pages) on women; and women start with The Post Card, the key being in each case having an independent interest in produced poetic accuracy. Skip the Preface to Spurs, written by an academic. A Derrida lecture on YouTube, listen to the answer to the first question, about minutes 5 to 28, on prayer.
See if there's the slightest trace of community destruction, or if it isn't a series of insights about what prayer is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyOWAcpIaB8 Listen from 5:50 to 27:48 It's been oublished in print but the transcription is bafflingly wrong in print ("has more than one age" is printed as "has more than one edge" for example, in a key phrase).
