Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I guess I'll live here for a while

God willing. that is.


Home-maintenance is a bitch. Even if you do it yourself, which I can't. Powerwash, scraping and sanding, replacing any bad wood with ASIC, replacing all door and window screens (I like open windows all year), and maybe begin repainting next week.


We have 9 people. painters and carpenters, today.  


What do you do?

I’m 76. I do as much as I can. Limiting factor is my wife won’t let me do ladders. However, if she is not home I sometimes get out the ladder, just for the thrill. Rumor is that this summer my ladder will be confiscated.

Since we have a brick house, our trim is pretty much the only thing we worry about. We have the trim painted every ten or fifteen years. My wife uses a bleach/soap solution and sprays as many windows as she can reach from the ground each spring. That's about it.

I’d LIKE to do it myself, as would my husband.
Realistically, we have to hire out most of it. Even if we use family occasionally, we pay the grandkids as a way of replacing the lost opportunity to work for money.
