Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Friday, January 26. 2024What is Maggie's Farm? It's been a long road, with many changes over the years (but with no changes to our antique graphic presentation). We (and "we") has changed plenty over the years. I spose our vision - if there was one - has been to be an eclectic site. Yes, we try to have a daily bulletin board of interesting and/or timely items, but we don't aim to "cover the news," whatever that means. It can look like a conservative site, but it's intended to be more contrarian. Traditionalist. Skeptical for sure - always because the world is full of BS and propaganda and always was. When the MSM is riding some ideologically-motivated, politically-biased hobby horse, we like to offer other views. Sometimes rightly, sometimes in error, but I still think our perspectives are mostly rational and skeptical. I do appreciate all of the people who send me links to use. That's good, but it would be fun to have more voluntary writers. People do get worn out by it over time and, if it's no longer fun, why bother? Simpler just to email links to the Editor - little ol' me. As best I can tell, several millions of people look at our site each year from all over the world (blocked in China I think but not in Norway). That is cool, but there is no vision of what we want to be or become - if anything. Never made one penny from this hobby, and some think that is stupid. Maybe, but I never made a penny from playing tennis either but when I played well, Mrs. BD noticed... If you have plenty of good content, Substack seems like a place to offer it these days. Getting crowded though. Lots of competition in the arena of public affairs but not many sites love Farmall tractors. Yeah, always loved our old Farmall except on steeps. Little scary on steeps - not built for our New England hills.

"Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for".
Perfect! I appreciate the site for its wide variety of news articles. Skeptical is a valued response to the insane parts of the country.
Links to a writer (thanks & cheers)
https://dexquire.substack.com/p/mr-quire-regrets Not sure how to describe what you do, but you do it very well!
I don't even know the way I stopped up right here, however I thought this post was once great.
I don't know who you are but certainly you are going to a well-known blogger in the event you aren't already. Cheers! Have appreciated this site for many years. Thought about writing something, but not talented enough. I agree with maddog. Love the variety of writings.
You owe no one any rationale. I find Maggie's Farm, and appreciate it, as I've always found it, under your stewardship: non-threatening, non-blustery, even-keeled, just as you describe it, contrarian but traditionalist. A dash of our namesake's composer is always enjoyed, even despite the inevitable crank who, unable to appreciate, can't resist squawking about how so-n-so can't sing. And the trollz get tiresome, but it gives many commenters something to bounce off of. I will never travel to Italy, or eat or cook most foodie posts you share. But many do or will.
When if you decide to retire or take a respite, part of my daily routine will shift, but that's life on the farm, buddy. Thanks for all you share, BD. You do the work so we don't have to. This is the best news/non-news site on the internet. Thank you for all of your efforts.
It's sort of like how Prairie Home Companion was for me - it grounded me and got me ready for the week ahead. After PHC was no more, I think that I use Maggie's Farm for that purpose. That is cool, but there is no vision of what we want to be or become - if anything.
That whole "vision" thing is highly overrated. Maniacs, addicts, and psychopaths have visions, ones the rest of us should be spared from. Around 20 years ago when blogs were more trendy, I came across this site. Since then, most days of the year I check in to see what is posted. I appreciate Maggie's sensibilities and have gleaned much that is useful, amusing and comforting from this blog over the years. Please keep it up. Thanks
I first came upon Maggie's Farm from a link a friend sent me who would otherwise disagree with virtually everything talked about on your site. I cannot remember what the link was about, but I noticed many articles fell into the slightly more conservative viewpoint of classic liberalism, which I guess I am. I found many of the articles posted interesting and have checked in daily for many years. I thought the ability to post links was reserved for the founders of Maggies's farm. Is this not true? How do you submit an article that would be of great interest to your followers? I am Canadian, and I often observe the "going's on" in America from an outsider's point of view.
Thank you for your efforts. I want you to know they are VERY much appreciated around the world, and provide a beacon of hope within "the beacon hope" in the country known as the U.S.A. Have enjoyed this corner of the world for some years. Understand 'tired'.
Hope isn't a plan but hope a few regular contributors step in to assist. Thanks & regards Thank you for keeping this corner of the internet going! The personality of this site is worth a dozen Substacks. It doesn't have to 'become' anything, what it is is what your readers need.
When our world crashed around us I would sit at night and come to MF. I wrote about our experiences, about having my DH's career ruined because we would not work for evil people. Being stalked, loosing my job because "you have to defend single women". Watching our universities and the academy start to slide and then collapse w/out an ethical value system. When all of this was going in our lives I came to MF late at night to save my self! It was all I had because by that time the Episcopal Church was gone also. You have been so very important here Bird Dog. Thank you.
Thank you . I love your contrarian views and have enjoyed them for many years now. Hope you are not giving it up!
Often a lurker...sometimes a commenter...always a reader.
Carry on! I don't rightly know how long I've been coming here, but I am grateful for your efforts, your outlook, and your commitment. Grateful to all of the Maggie's Farm contributors.
Even-handed Skeptical Contrarians: The world needs more of them. I still love Maggie's and I love writing for it.
The only downside is the occasional troll who pops up from time to time and says nonsense. I find people like that unwelcome because they tend to lie and get tangential and make obscure and vague claims. Too much work. But in general the commenters are good people and I like most of them and they are reasonable. Sadly, since my job changed significantly 3 years ago, my ability to write regularly took a lot out of my day to day preparation. And the troll made providing anything annoying when it comes down to "do you like doing it?" Yes I do. I just can't stand trolls who are engage behaviors which I consider unwelcome like those. But I am trying to make my job less work so I can write again. It will take time as my firm is expanding rapidly and my role joining has been time consuming as we have grown dramatically and I love my job there intensely. So I write when I can and I will when I can. Thanks everyone in the comments who are fans, people who have joined us to walk, and people who have recognized and worked exposing the troll for the general annoyance it provides. Claims are often made which are not only incorrect - but I've found in my full time job some companies look at providers of that nature "needed" while my company has worked hard to reduce the impact of that kind of general idiocy and unwelcomeness. Your other commenter have expressed it very well. You provide a garden of delights and a haven of rationality and moderation in an hysterical and divided world.
Thank you! This seems like a good time to say how much I've appreciated your efforts over the years.
Like many readers, I've tried to suss out the relationships among you all, especially in the early years. You were a gateway to many other sites that I use to keep me informed and somewhat connected. In the early days, I was very fond of The Chairman's posts, good guidance for business and life. There was one posting in particular I printed out and gave to my daughters as the were entering high school. They are in their mid- thirties now. So thanks a ton, and keep up the good work. It is appreciated. Thanks you for your effort and good sense keeping this page going. Visit most days and enjoy the articles you bring together.
I check Maggie's Farm every day to see what's what. Aside from the fact that it sometimes feels like the Italian Cookery Blog, I almost always find something of interest. I hope it continues many more years.
"O" to be a writer... I so wish I could turn a phrase as do so many here. I come here to get grounded. I spend huge amounts of time checking out the news. I get burned quite crisp from it. Here I can see, in the gentile society of persons with interests beyond the internet drek, another side to life. From gardening to history it is all quite refreshing. You must update your blog roll. The author of "Woodpile Report" has passed on years ago. Also, get a co-pilot. If something were to happen the wisdom of years could be gone in a flash.
Love Maggie's Farm. Dylan fan so the tie in works for me. Wish I could upload a picture of my 1947 Ford 2N...it would look good next to the Farmall
Thank you so much for providing this blog. I enjoy its eclectic nature. The outdoor posts on birds, nature, gardening, and hunting are favorites of mine although there seem to be less than in past years. However, I generally find several links which I enjoy reading to expand my viewpoint, and the lectionary posts are always a good way to start my Sunday morning contemplatively. Saturday poetry posts often feature old favorites. Please keep on keeping on.
A daily requirement now and source of many prescient forwards to my friends. Was looking for the lyrics to Dylan's song ten years ago and have received benefit far beyond that since.
