We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. No. As your link states, regional warming was largely due to a variety of regional factors. While there was a global warming trend over the 1930s & 1940s, mean global temperature over the period was distinctly less than the current mean global temperature.

There’s no attribution for the source of that chart. It purports to compare global temperatures but in the ‘30s, the vast majority of weather stations were in the US so anything that claims to show global temperatures are either lying or estimating based on mostly US temperatures. Not only that but that chart labels 1936 as one of the coolest years in the last century which is laughable.

The heat wave of 1936 was not only in the US but across the Northern Hemisphere:

The “raw data” you mentioned in post #3 is not raw temperature data but a comparison an average between 1981 to 2010 and says that the ‘30s were much cooler between 1981 and 2010 which is just as silly as your Global Average Surface Temperature chart.

It doesn't take perfect coverage to determine temperature anomaly. If you have a hundred stations scattered randomly across the globe, and ninety show a significant warming trend and ten show no significant trend, what is the probability that the globe is, in fact, warming?

The raw historical data is subject to discontinuities due to station changes, instrument changes, missing data etc. The study takes the raw data and, instead of trying to splice the sections together, a process called homogenization, they looked for trends in each continuous section. The result was the same as the homogenization. That implies that the process of homogenization, what you called "egregious manipulation" was not in error. See Rohde, et al. Chicken Little, we've been in a global warming trend for the last 12,000 years, and will continue to be until the planet begins a new ice age. The 30s and 40s don't matter, the last century doesn't matter, nor do the last thousand years matter to the planet.

Get over your self. There's nothing you can do about it except be thankful you were't born in an ice age.

We directly responded. If the data is showing an erroneous trend because it has been "egregiously manipulated", then independent measures would show a different result. They don't. We also pointed to independent statistical analysis of the raw data which doesn't require splicing data sets, homogenization.

So, now, the conspiracy has to expand to include all other sources, including the satellite data and ocean heat content observations: different scientists, different countries, different cultures, different fields, different methods. But you choose to believe the one who confirms your prejudice.

When somebody tries to re-define evolutionary biology as 'problematic', all of the normal people are quickly going to conclude that 'somebody' is the problematic one instead.

I would like to tell Mr. Davis a little piece of CA history that he will find interesting. It was in CA in 1973 (+/-1) that the majority (all?) of the class of attorneys sitting for the state bar exam failed the "ethics" portion of the exam. It was the first time that had happened. It was immediately brushed under the media carpet, but I am sure a diligent search of records in Sacaramento or Davis would find this to be fact. That was the first round of hippies to sit for the bar exam. If my memory serves me they were allowed to pass on through.

In a suburb of Cincinnati a "teen/youth" 15 years old punched the female teacher in the head so hard that she is now going into brain surgery in hopes they can save her life. I suspect this "teen" was over 6' tall and probably over 200 lbs. IMHO any male "teen" who gets into a fight/assault and can do that kind of damage should be treated as an adult without regard to actual age. If you are as big as a man and as strong as a man who in the hell are we protecting???

A doctoral dissertation from the 1950s, one of the first to use a computer to process data, compared college freshman academic performance with high school grades, ACT/SAT scores, and various psychological tests. It found out that the best predictors for college freshman academic performance were high school grades, ACT/SAT scores, and a psychological attribute the author called "stick-to-it-iveness." That is, the ability to persevere in the face of setbacks. You got a bad score on the latest test? Study more!

As high school grades these days are inflated, they have lost their predictive ability.

Scores don't count? Several years ago the NYT published an article that pointed out that blacks constituted only 0.7 percent of tenured math professors at the country's top 50 research universities. The NYT told us that 0.7 percent was evidence of "racial exclusion." A commenter dug up an article from the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education which pointed out that in 2005, blacks constituted 0.7 percent of those scoring 750 or above on the Math SAT. Which tracks rather well with blacks consituting 0.7 percent of tenured math professors.

Did you know that the FBI was created by executive order? This means that any sitting president could write an executive order ending the existence of the FBI. We really need this. The FBI is actively working against the U.S. and our constitution. End it and send in forensic auditors to determine the extent of the damage and unlawful actions. Then get congress to authorize $225 million dollars for the DOJ to be used to prosecute FBI agents who broke the law.

Which is why we quarantine academics to universities in order to protect the rest of society. If they can prove themselves to be useful and practical, we allow them to be hired as consultants for industry.
But the vast majority of them are useless liberal arts faculty that posture and preen for attention while they put forth harmful theories and nonsense.
