Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Boxing Day is the traditional day to tip your helpers of the past year. Besides househeld help like Butler, Ladies' Maids, cook, sucllery maids, Housemaids, footmen, doormen, etc., best to include the early morning Dunkin Donuts crew, the garbagemen, postman, and other people who routinely make your life go better. At 5:30 AM on Christmas Eve, en route to my gym, I noticed the Dunkin tip jar filled with $10 bills. You bet, because everybody depends on them. The year of Ozempic bodies and Barbie Botox - Corporate feminism will not save us. The Cross and the Machine - After years of atheism, I went searching for the truth. I found Buddhism, then witchcraft, and eventually, Christianity. None of the buildings in the Gaza Strip would have been destroyed if Hamas was never allowed to use them to attack Israel and to hide in. It is sad to see war in civilian areas but who brought it to civilian areas? Hamas uses civilians as shields and pawns. All those civilian deaths are on Hamas. If Hamas survives this war than all these civilian deaths will be repeated again and again because Hamas is all about death. The "Palestinians" embrace Hamas and embrace their culture of death and this is the inevitable result of that choice. FAFO
Just re-read a history of the Armenian Genocide. It provides a thorough, long view reminder and understanding of Islamic atrocities, even 100+ years ago. It was the brutal slaughter of >1.4 million fellow countrymen (non-muslim) who had been part of Turkish culture for hundreds of years. In fact there is no shortage of such reminders.
There is no circumstance from which hamas and other such terrorists can be excused. It is part and parcel of their beliefs. I consider myself to be a good tipper, but I had never thought about tipping the garbageman. Last year I did. We sent him cash in a Christmas card envelope. He had left a Seasons Greetings card on the trash can with his home address. "Are you sure you want to send cash?" my spouse asked. "How will we know he got it?"
The next trash day, our trash can was rolled to the top of the driveway. He got the tip. Pretty nice of him. Every single week for the next 52, minus one or two of which I assumed he was on vacation, the trash can was rolled to the top of the driveway. On my block, I notice that my trash can is the only one that gets rolled up the driveway. I can't be the only one who sent a tip. Can I? Was I too generous in my tip? I didn't get a Seasons Greetings card from him this year. However, since I routinely roll my neighbors can to the top of his driveway, I noticed that he got a Seasons Greetings card. I sent the man a tip again this year. My tip was about $4 dollars a week. Is that to much? What's the proper amount? There is no proper amount.
We have 2 guys, so $50 each. Should be more generous. Yeah, I give them cash. I simply do not understand tipping your garbage man or postman. And I might add that even tipping food service people makes no sense anymore. I would argue for zero tipping. If you are making six figures and you want to do this with your money fine, I don't care. But to argue that "we" who likely make less than a postman or a garbage man should tip them is ludicrous. Just deliver the mail and pick up the trash and do your job.
I can tell you this; we rarely go out to eat anymore and of course cost is mostly the reason and tipping is a big part of the cost. I never have a pizza delivered and again that is 100% because of the expected tip. Screw them I can drive there and pick up my own pizza. I honestly think tipping is counter productive businesses as I and most lower income people are searching for ways to avoid businesses where tipping is "mandatory". Back during the WuFlu Fiasco, my wife and I decided to NOT be reclusive, so we eschewed take-out or delivery meals, and deliberately visited a whole bunch of local eateries. Whose staffs were thrilled to provide great service; we tipped accordingly (and still do).
Other than that, there are just a few folks we tip: for Boxing Day, our piano tutor and our lawn guy, both of whom are more steadfast than clocks; and our "bandit" plumber, who provides same-day service until about 10pm, 7 days a week. HE gets tipped handsomely on every visit. Just read the Powerline take on the ‘Mayor’ of Gaza.
He wasn’t even elected. He was selected by Hamas. Gee, no wonder the party of Our Democracy loves him. I'm surprised you haven't included Francis Menton's story on the President-of-Harvard's scholastic shenanigans, which have continued to expand in spite of all the damage control - which is a clue to how really clueless they are, as a group. They have managed to keep in place a person whose only qualifications appear to be the most toxic aspects of Woke DEI Culture, and none of its (very short list of) virtues.
https://www.manhattancontrarian.com/blog/2023-12-24-claudine-gay-update-now-its-data-falsification We tip just about everyone who gives us regular service at our home, from delivery drivers to lawn care folks to house cleaners. Cash for most, checks for the ones we pay weekly by check.
