We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Anatomy of the Outboard Motor


We like our inboard Yanmar diesel, but outboards have become the thing these days. Multiple outboards, in fact. Three or four 200 hp outboards cost a lot more than a diesel engine.


I kinda like the diesel rumble, like a commercial fishing boat, but it is loud. Unlike a commercial boat, we are improving the engine sound insulation on ours right now.

We used to have a Yanmar engine on a re-use pit pump. Boy, were they ever economical to run. They used very little diesel fuel/hr.

Plus diesels are more reliable, if well kept.

The spendthrifts like lots of outboards, supposedly to get them screaming out to the offshore spots more quickly so they have more time for fishing. I think it's mostly just a 'my boats' bigger' competition. Now you can get controllers that steer them separately so you don't have to possess any docking or piloting skill anymore. Just point and click. Which, for me, completes the picture of such fools.

I had two Yamaha 4-strokes on mine, while we had it. Pretty much flawless and nice and quiet. For a stately cruiser like yours, I think the diesel is a good choice I hope your insulation work pays off. Have you thought about a better silencer?
