Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

What are the civilian casualties in Ukraine? Or in any of the conflicts around the world in the last 20 years. It is rarely trumpeted like the casualties in Gaza. Why? The answer to that tells you all you need to know about the effectiveness of propaganda ad that we are all being manipulated.
Civilian casualties are impossible to avoid in war. Bot side have a responsibility to try to avoid them and not to intentionally cause them but beyond that their number one responsibility is to win. If the U.S. were at war and losing meant we would all die or be enslaved wouldn't you want your military to win? That is exactly the position Israel is in. OneGuy: What are the civilian casualties in Ukraine?
Over 10,000 since the invasion, including hundreds of children. OneGuy: Civilian casualties are impossible to avoid in war. Bot side have a responsibility to try to avoid them and not to intentionally cause them but beyond that their number one responsibility is to win. True. However, the IDF has been leveling entire city blocks and has created a vast humanitarian crisis. In the long run, Israel may find that the strategic cost was far higher than the tactical gain. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers are purging Palestinian villages in the West Bank. Zachriel: What doesn't it know?

OneGuy: mouthpiece for the Hamas propaganda machine.
Hardly. But to clarify: While the Palestinians have legitimate grievances, they should be ashamed of what Hamas did in their name. Hamas needs to be destroyed as a political entity. War criminals must be brought to justice—one way or another. However, Hamas wanted Israel to overreact, just as Al-Qaeda wanted the U.S. to overreact. Time will tell whether Israel can avoid the fate of the Americans. I don't agree that Israel is overreacting. Everyone who tries to make the argument that Israel is wrong OR that the "Palestinians" are right MUST ignore most of what happens and has happened. Hamas, which is made up of Palestinians and supported by Palestinians has been at war with Israel since Israel was created in 1948. They fire missiles, bomb, shoot and stab Israelis every chance they get since 1948. Israel has tried numerous times to make peace and the Palestinians always reject it. They will not live peacefully unless and until Israel is destroyed. So WHO is overreacting???
Hamas reports their own 'civilian' casualties. Do remember they reported about 600 dead from an 'Israeli bomb'. How did that report turn out?
OneGuy: They will not live peacefully unless and until Israel is destroyed. So WHO is overreacting???
The very real threat to Israel is not an argument about whether or not they are overreacting or playing into the hands of the extremists. It is sometimes possible to win militarily against terrorists, but it much more often requires the cooperation of others. "In the long run, Israel may find that the strategic cost was far higher than the tactical gain."
In the short run, the Palestinians are already finding that the strategic cost for their cause is much higher than the "tactical gain" of that murderous attack on 7 October. Hitching their wagon to Hamas is the big Palestinian mistake. But then, they've been seizing the wrong opportunities to advance their cause since 1948. Nobody wants a corrupt, Islamic extremist Palestinian state. JJM: In the short run, the Palestinians are already finding that the strategic cost for their cause is much higher than the "tactical gain" of that murderous attack on 7 October.
That's not clear. While the Palestinian people have certainly suffered, if Israel is isolated from the international community and ends up having to directly occupy Gaza, they could be bogged down for a generation. If the result is the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, it could be disastrous in the long run. One question is whether there was a better way. The Israeli government was distracted by their expansion of settlements in the West Bank and with internal division. The important question is what to do now. Israel is not winning hearts and minds. As usual, the United States is one of their few staunch allies, but political dysfunction is threatening even that thin thread of support. Zachriel: What doesn't it know?

No one 'wins hearts and minds' in the Arab world. Even Arab leadership rules with an iron fist. There are never 'moderate' Islamic rulers, only those that take heads to control their population. The world would lose nothing if they all disappeared.

Only two parties can "resolve" this issue (assuming after 75 years now it can be resolved): Israelis and Palestinians.
No amount of global bloviating and pontificating from your State Department or the UN or anyone else can change that. But the Israelis are now out of the "hearts and minds" business. The security of the State of Israel and its citizens trumps all that for now. And, as usual, the Palestinians have managed to screw themselves yet again. Oh, boo hoo.

JJM: Only two parties can "resolve" this issue (assuming after 75 years now it can be resolved): Israelis and Palestinians.
While the Israelis and Palestinians must be central to any resolution, saying no one else is involved is simply incorrect. No country exists in isolation, especially so in the modern world where everything is globally interconnected. Regional countries are highly affected by events in Gaza. Egypt and Jordan are especially concerned the war could widen. Both sides have material support from outside; Israel from the United States, Hamas from Iran and other actors. At some point, the immediate conflict will end in Gaza. What then? If you care about Israel, you must realize that Israel cannot stand alone. Western powers and Arab neighbors are critical for ending the long-term conflict. The United Nations or an Arab coalition may be involved at some point as peacekeepers; but extremists will attempt to undermine that peace. We'll ask again: Once the immediate conflict ends, what then? JJM: And, as usual, the Palestinians have managed to screw themselves yet again. QUOTE: The Great Trump Freakout Begins . . . Trump drew an important distinction between the news media in its entirety and what he famously called the fake news media — and it was the latter that he dubbed the enemy of the people. The phrase "enemy of the people" is a phrase associated with purges of the past, infamously used by Stalin. Trump has also called his political enemies "vermin," another phrase associated with purges. QUOTE: The American people were free to elect the repugnant Hillary Clinton, but they chose not to. Well, to be fair, the American people chose Clinton. Due to a historical peculiarity, the Electoral College chose Trump. QUOTE: Trump is no longer a wild crazy idiot. Pay attention to the reframing. Trump is like the kid who keeps pushing boundaries. He doesn't have to have a deep understanding to be more successful in undermining constitutional checks in his second term. Meanwhile, Trump says he will only be a dictator for the first day of his administration. More TTS (TrumpTourettesSyndrome) along with some ChatGPT courtesy of the Quibble-DickZ.
Keep crying. Boiled down to it's simplest explanation the reason the left and even some on the right fear Trump is because he is honest and cannot be bought or bribed. Our federal government is rife with communists and many other anti-American and anti-constitution activists who are actively undermining our country to the detriment of Americans. Trump would expose them. That is why every tool was used to prevent his administration from being effective in 2016 and why the election was stolen in 2020 and why he must be stopped in 2024.
OneGuy: Boiled down to it's simplest explanation the reason the left and even some on the right fear Trump is because he is honest and cannot be bought or bribed.
Meanwhile, Trump says he will only be a dictator for the first day of his administration. (That's all it takes.) OneGuy: he is honest Hahaha! QUOTE: "Well, to be fair, the American people chose Clinton." Well, to be fair, the American people legally choose Presidents through the Electoral College, so you are incorrect. QUOTE: "Trump has also called his political enemies "vermin," another phrase associated with purges." Sorta like calling your political enemies "deplorables." QUOTE: Meanwhile, Trump says he will only be a dictator for the first day of his administration. Oh no! Goodness me! Liberals are such psychological pansies. toxic breadcrumbing:
You don't have to make this complicated. The name makes it sound really bad but it is in fact something we all do. Animals do it too. If you live in a society then you socialize and you have no choice but to treat everyone differently and mostly based on how they treat you and what you want in your life. I know this is supposed to just be about romantic relationships but that is just a sub category of all relationships. This is what humans do; they act and react to facts and events based on what they want/need. If I'm hungry and you put a feast in front of me and invite me to sit and enjoy it I will. On the other hand if you have a feast and use it to coerce me into doing what you want I may enjoy the feast but still not do what you want. Which person was toxic? Congressional Campus hearings... pathetic scarcely covers the behavior of university presidents. Austin Warns Congress Failing to Pass Ukraine Aid 'Very Likely' Leads to US Troops on the Ground In Europe
QUOTE: Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned Congress Tuesday that if lawmakers fail to pass more aid to Ukraine that it "very likely" will lead to U.S. troops on the ground in Europe defending NATO allies in other countries Russia may target next. Looks like a thinly veiled attempt at blackmail. Of course Putin might not attack a NATO ally which would make Austin's threat empty. The BS they are peddling is the same as The Domino Theory that was sold to us in the mid 60s if we didn't escalate the war in Viet Nam. It goes like this,if we don't stop the bad guys in country A, and country A is defeated, then countries B, C, and D will fall in quick succession. Of course that didn't happen in Southeast Asia and it is questionable whether it will happen in Eastern Europe. Even if it did happen. Even if the Russian juggernaut rolled all the way to Brest, why does it really matter to us? OTOH, if the neocons are so cock sure on the need for aid to Ukraine, why not seal the seal the Mexican border? The dems are used to having their way all the time. They don't like the idea of compromising or choosing priorities. They want it all. https://themessenger.com/politics/austin-warns-congress-failing-to-pass-ukraine-aid-very-likely-leads-to-us-troops-on-the-ground-in-europe Mises.org 12/05/2023 Ryan McMaken
