Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Brooks Brothers: "It is an off the rack suit, M'am."

Mrs. BD dragged me down to Brooks, cuz moths destroyed my wedding and funeral suit. Plus she wanted my dressing to be up-to-date. Spent a fair amount of money. We do go out quite a bit and I am lazy with clothing because I am not looking to pick up chicks these days and have nobody to impress with clothing except to be appropriate for the occasion.


FYI, they have excellent help and service, and also do bespoke stuff if you want with good Italian wool.  She was not entirely satisfied with the fit of the two suits she wanted for me, but the title tells you the response. Yes, well-tailored by their folks, but not perfect like some prosperous people have. Whatever.


Mrs. BD is right - men look their best in well-fitted suits, assuming they are in decent shape. Can say the same for womens' dress, of course.


I'm happy to use this stuff for a wedding, but want no more damn funerals right now. Or my own.


Local Italian men and women look great.  That's how you can tell them from the tourists. Not the kids though who try to look American.

You should be happy to know that in any fine men's wear shop--Brooks should be in this group--they can call in a tailor, who will "chalk" the garment and perhaps
not absolutely--but, possibly come up with a little better fit. In terms of "fit" in many cases just a little adjustment can make a very big improvement on the way the garment looks and hangs. You should tell Mrs. BD you want a tailor to take a look at your new suit!

Yes, they do do a good job with chalk. No complaints from me, but I do not really care much.

I've got a Brooks Brothers "off the rack" suit that has done me well for 25 years. Obviously, I am not a daily suit wearer. Weddings and funerals...so who remembers what you wore.

I gave away all my suits, sports jackets and ties 24 years ago when I retired. All I have left of those days is one white dress shirt and one tie. Now my everyday clothing is short and sandals. I do live in a retirement community where 90% of the men here wear the same thing all year. It is 116 degrees here in the Summer and a balmy 70 or so in the Winter. On a really cold day, 60 degrees or so, I wear shorts, sandals and a fleece sweater. That's my dress up outfit. We do have dances every week and dinners too. Most everyone wears... yup, shorts and sandals. I do have some decent polo shirts, well, decent my be an exaggeration. Maybe I mean clean Polo shirts almost wrinkle free, however the dryer leaves them. Almost everyone has the same accessories when we go to a dance or other function; a bottle of booze or wine. I opt for water. When we drive we are that irritating octogenarian in front of you driving the speed limit and actually stopping for stop signs, sorry; not sorry.

Just an add on. I still have a tuxedo— every man should have a tux. And I still have my academic regalia…worn twice a year at Fall Assembly and again at Graduation. The regalia has proved useful to loan to those who wish to “dress” for some Harry Potter event.

Not just for men who are in shape. In fact it's even more important for those of us packing extra pounds. Look at Trump - he almost looks slim in those suits!

Haven't bought a suit in many years, but the couple that I have still fit well. I was always partial to the cut of Givenchy suits, especially after being fitted, but the premium Hart, Schaffner, Marx suits were also very well made. But those Givenchy suits - as someone else said, it was like wearing comfortable pajamas.

I still have the tux I was married in, and married off my kids in. For some reason my shirt collars have shrunk over the years though, so I am stuck with using those damn 'button extenders' now. I'm too cheap to buy new dress shirts when I'm only wearing a tie once or twice per year, at most.

I go to Italy a couple of times a year.

I very rarely see a well-dressed Italian man or woman. Jeans and padded jackets and sneakers reign. Even among those aged 70+.

I remember my first time in Rome- 33 years ago- and being struck by how well the women and men dressed.

It is not just that those who used to dress well have gone- it is that people who used to dress well have abandoned doing so.
