Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

How the Espionage Act Went Too Far
Censorship 1918 style. QUOTE: The Espionage Act was created in reaction to the threats – real or perceived – of America’s enemies during World War I. In many cases, though, the law targeted innocent people. Targeting innocent people? Sounds like the Patriot Act. QUOTE: The Act was amended to include what was called The Sedition Act. It criminalized the use of “disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language” concerning the government, flag, or armed forces, or leading others to regard these things with contempt. It also empowered the Postmaster General to deny mail service to seditious publications. . . . The Act’s challenge to Free Speech was soon tested in court. Charles T. Schenck was arrested for mailing 15,000 antiwar leaflets to men who had recently been conscripted. The leaflets urged the draftees to oppose their conscriptions and petition the government to repeal the draft laws. Schenck was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The case was appealed to the Supreme Court, which upheld the verdict. Justice Oliver W. Holmes wrote that free speech could be curtailed when the nation was facing a “clear and present danger.” Presidential candidate Eugene Debs spoke out against the war and was also convicted. He was sent to prison for 10 years. In 1919 — a year after the war — socialist Victor Berger was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for printing anti-war opinions. Meanwhile, Postmaster General Albert Burleson was exercising his power to restrict publications he deemed insufficiently patriotic. he deemed insufficiently patriotic. The original Fact Checker? https://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/2022/08/how-the-espionage-act-went-too-far/ Woodrow Wilson, who groomed the American public to enter the war, after promising to keep us out of the war, was the only "clear and present danger" to the public. But Holms was popular among progressives.
If there is a law more draconian to that of personal liberty, than conscription against one’s will, I only see slavery. If the war is just, the cause noble, and the country worth defending, then plenty will volunteer.
B. Hammer: If the war is just, the cause noble, and the country worth defending, then plenty will volunteer.
Tragedy of the commons. People can rely on suckers patriots to defend their freedom. When prospective volunteers see that others are free-riders, it hurts morale and recruitment. Furthermore, countries that have used conscription have generally had a military advantage over those that didn't. Z:
QUOTE: When prospective volunteers see that others are free-riders, it hurts morale and recruitment. Which branch of the service did you volunteer for, to gain such pretend wisdom? B. Hammer: pretend wisdom?
We didn't make a claim to personal authority, so your ad hominem is a fallacy of irrelevancy. Rather, we pointed to a social phenomenon. There is an immediate competitive advantage to letting others fight for you, even if it might be a long-term disadvantage for the group. This is often analyzed through game theory. In a multicultural society there are cultures that never show up on the battlefield whether drafted or not. You evidently weren't around for the RVN games.
Even my father was well aware of this in WWII. He and I both served in the military and we both volunteered.

"tragedy of the commons" Heh. First time in history you've embraced that concept. Which further demonstrates your propensity for bad faith.
Conscription is neither necessary nor efficient for a country that is competent at the current or even the last generation of warfare. The personnel density required for land forces in modern warfare is a fraction of that of 50 years ago. Conscripts tend to serve short terms and have low retention rates, which greatly increases training costs as well as costing the military much of its institutional knowledge and prevents the furth honing of combat skills. Conscripts also generally have lower morale and discipline than volunteers. Further a modern US Army squad will typically have more deliverable firepower on call that an entire US Army company would have been able to put on target in WWII. Given the range, precision, and lethality of modern weapons, it seems unlikely any major power will be engaged in a prolonged land war with a peer or near peer. Doubly true given the demographic decline the developed and developing worlds are experiencing. Which will only accelerate. James: First time in history you've embraced that concept.
Not that it’s relevant, but that is not the case. James: Conscription is neither necessary nor efficient for a country that is competent at the current or even the last generation of warfare. While conscription has not always been necessary in history, it is found even in militaries with highly professional armies. For instance, Israel has universal conscription for Jewish citizens. The world wars used conscription extensively. Small countries, such as Ukraine, are more likely to have to rely on conscription. And by your own estimation, avoiding conscription requires competency. Consequently, the necessity of conscription is contingent. The claim was that volunteers are always sufficient. But that is not the case.

QUOTE: People can rely on suckers patriots to defend their freedom. When prospective volunteers see that others are free-riders, it hurts morale and recruitment. THIS is quite the window into your souls. The "Palestinians" are raised from birth to be willing martyrs and kill Jews. The embrace the Hamas policy of firing rockets from school yards and hospitals and hope that Israel will retaliate and kill them so they can be martyrs for Allah. They do this to further the cause of Hamas and not for freedom or their own state nut simply to allow more Jews to be killed. None of the "Palestinians" are innocent civilians or bystanders in this war they are all willing soldiers ready to die for their cause.
It is notable that in this battle of good vs evil that the Democrat party is becoming the Nazi party. They have long ago become the anti-American party but now they are removing all pretense. Palestinians long ago exhausted any shadow of sympathy I might have had for their circumstances and more recently exhausted all of my patience. Which is to say, their cries and those of their supporters fall on deaf ears for me. Most of what both of those groups say is rabid antisemitism.
But maybe one ought to generally avoid absolute terms like "none" Surely a newborn child is innocent? Surely there are a least a few residents in Gaza who completely despise Hamas, would happily live at peace with Jewish neighbors but fear the certain death they and their family would be subject to for saying so? Are they not innocent? Should their deaths not be mourned by civilized men who know of it? More to the point. Such deaths, despite being the moral horror they are, are intrinsic to war. Israel is justified in aggressively pursuing a war that causes many such deaths, and anyone deputing that is either a liar or a fool. Because Israel, and increasing the rest of the world, does not have the luxury of shrinking from such wars. By the same token, anyone denying the intrinsic horror of a war is either a liar or a fool. ...our non-political expert regulators in action.
The bottom line...."The more you learn about what regulators are up to, the more you realize that the essence of the job is abuse of power". The essence of the administrative state is to become violent nags that threaten your existence. that is about the only thing currently taught in the humanities at the academy. It is not an insurrection when Democrats do it. The latest example of the old double standard at work. feeblemind: It is not an insurrection when Democrats do it.
QUOTE: A White House fence was vandalized Saturday night with red paint as pro-Palestinian protesters shook the gate to one entrance to the executive mansion as some chanted “F–k Joe Biden,” the New York Post reported. What makes you think it should be considered an insurrection? (One person was arrested for property damage, and others are being investigated for vandalism.) What makes you think the events in Washington DC on Jan. 6, 2021 should be considered an insurrection?
James: What makes you think the events in Washington DC on Jan. 6, 2021 should be considered an insurrection?
Some people planned and acted on storming the Capitol to stop the certification of the Electoral College, in order to prevent the constitutional transfer of power. Notably, several people were convicted of doing just that. And yet nobody thought to bring a single gun along...in America. You're funny.
Lord Heathen: And yet nobody thought to bring a single gun along...in America.
That is incorrect. Other weapons included stun guns, clubs, a spear, chemical sprays, and knives. An American flag pole was even used to assault a police officer on the ground. “Every single one of those Capitol law enforcement officers, death is the remedy, that is the only remedy they get." The officer he assaulted suffered burns, a heart attack, a concussion, and traumatic brain injury.

9 Ways To Scare Off Californians Looking To Move Into Your Neighborhood
Once again, the Bee knocks it out of the park. Cousins of mine in LA are diehard Republicans, for at least two reasons. First, as entrepreneurs, they experience how hostile the Demos are to entrepreneurs. Second, as relatively long-time Californians- their parents moved to California in the '30s- they see how Democrats have turned the Golden State into fool's gold. Do you ever wonder are the Left/Democrats actually intentionally trying to destroy our country? There is a shit ton of money, tax dollars and billionaires dollars, being spent right now to force closure of fossil fuel generation plants under the theory that wind and solar will replace them. Understand that closing a fossil fuel generating facility isn't like shutting off your car which you can start again whenever you want to. These facilities will be closed and dismantled before we ever get the replacement "green" energy plants running. Why? Why not get them running first and proven before destroying our only backup? What if war breaks out and energy is essential to prepare for defending our country? Why do this back asswards? Why indeed.
Do you ever wonder are the Left/Democrats actually intentionally trying to destroy our country??? Do you ever wonder are the Left/Democrats actually intentionally trying to destroy our country???
IMHO, it is not intentional. Rather, they are ignorant so-and-sos who believe that what they WANT to be, will be. They haven't even considered the possibility that it would be a good idea to get the alternate energy facilities running first before shutting down the fossil fuel facilities. |
