Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

It's bird migration season


Migration goes on in North America through October and somewhat November. Except for hawks and a few other species, most migration occurs at night and up to 10,000 feet.


Via Cornell Lab of Ornithology, you can track migration volume (and species) daily by county and state. The major flyways (Eastern, Mississippi, and Western) naturally have the highest volumes.

Until I saw it I had no idea they migrated at night. As a EMS pilot I found it most unnerving to see flocks of geese tooling along at 1500 ft.
I only was able to see them over brightly lit cities. A crew from Little Rock (yeah, Arkansas, where they flood the rice fields to invite the migrating birds) caught one in the wind screen but was able to safely land.
