We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Origin of "pair of glasses"

I guess it's self-evident that eyeglasses began as monocles, so that's an easy one.


However, at Costco you can literally get a pair (two) of prescription eyeglasses for the price of one anywhere else. That's assuming you are not too fashion-conscious.

Glasses are a construct of the white male patriarchy.
Honking horns aside, no longer needed them after getting cataract removed.
Herr Doctor said I was too young for such things but did let it get Gigantor before removing.
One pair of prescription eyeglasses at the "poor people" hospital that is renamed often? $340.
I could get about six pairs at the local vision world for that price.

GIs needing glasses are fitted with prescriptions in basic training/boot camp/OTS. With what are affectionately called birth control glasses.

Zenni Optical dot com. $6.95 for Clark Kent frames & basic prescription lenses. It takes a couple of weeks for shipping (my guess is from India; the website says Northern California) but my nephew is tough on glasses and they work for him. I pay I think $60 for flex titanium frames with progressive bifocal lenses.

I have often wondered why the look of glasses determines the price. I have encountered that sales pressure and had to tell the associate numerous times that I don't care what they look like and in fact found none of them to look "good". Just give me the cheapest pair. I refused to even look at what was offered; just give me the cheapest pair.
