Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The incandescent light bulb ban is stupidity. Certain applications NEED the heat produced by incandescent lamps, the most simplistic of which are the Easy Bake Ovens, Lava Lamps, and heating well houses. The article states the obvious -- the market will take care of it.
Lighting, both commercial and residential, is a whopping 7% of energy consumption, and residential lighting is 2% of the total US energy consumption. Whoop-dee-do. Banning incandescent lamps for residential use isn't going to make much of a dent in US energy consumption. The "law" that was passed that banned incandescent lamps was a piece of s***. It used meaningless terminology and was written by idiots who knew NOTHING about lighting. I had always assumed the impetus behind it was GE, who had been doing questionable three-card monte on a vast scale in the 2000's and on. But I also think the Chinese (who are BIG LED manufacturers) also pushed for it. Incandescent bulbs have been very hard to find in my neck of the woods for some time.
I have found that a large percentage, perhaps as many as one in four LED bulbs fail within a couple of months of being put in use. I suspect the problem is a lack of quality control in China. Nonetheless it changes the economics of incandescent vs LED a bit. Usually, it is the drivers that fail. And usually, if it dies, it is poor quality control. And quality control is decidedly NOT very good in most factories in China.
I swapped out some G8 halogen bulbs with LEDs - they've been running 7 years+ now 24/7. Had one failure out of about 20, five years in.
I've had some other LED bulbs fail - but they've usually been in wet locations, that seems to make a difference. One failed after only a couple of years, the other failed after about 6 months being on constantly. I've been impressed by the lifespan of LEDs - they certainly last longer than CFLs or incandescents. Yes, you can be certain that lining of Congress critters pockets was involved. re ‘How Do I Do That?’ The New Hires of 2023 Are Unprepared for Work
The article blames school closures during the so-called pandemic for this but I would argue this problem has been gathering momentum for years. A watered down education combined with over inflated self esteem would contribute mightily to this problem. BTW, I was recently overcharged at a fast food restaurant by about $10 on an $11 order. The clueless kid behind the cash register told me the overcharge was "sales tax". That struck me as a breath taking lack of understanding of basic arithmetic. Are you sure it was a lack of understanding, or a con artist trying to steal ten dollars?
Years ago, my brother and I were getting breakfast at Hardees and after my brother handed the cashier a 20 for our order, the cashier stopped, confused. He had to call the manager over to see about getting the safe unlocked to give us our change of $1987. The manager had to explain to him that there should be a decimal point in the $2000 the kid had entered.
Also years ago, I had stopped at a convenience store to get a pack of crackers, a Coke, and a pack of cigarettes. Knowing the total would be about $8, I pulled a ten out of my wallet. When the cashier told me my total was $16, I told her that wasn't right, she rolled her eyes and re-rung the purchase and announced the total was indeed $16. I suggested she call the manager out of the office, to which she got all huffy but called her out. The manager looked at the register tape and pointed out that the cashier had the x2 key depressed and was trying to charge me for 2 of each item. No apology, no nothing from the cashier. Innumeracy is a result of not being taught Math properly and the lack of critical thinking skills as witnessed by the lady (and congenital liar Brian Williams) a few years back who pointed out that Micheal Bloomberg's failed campaign for President wasted $500 million, which was enough to give a million dollars to each and every American citizen. Whether they thought the population of the US was 500 or they didn't understand that 500 million divided by a million was not somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 million was never explained. So, will all the legal dejecta stop Trump from being President again? I hope not.
It may depend on whether election officers hit the X2 key combined with their critical thinking skills.
They can't let Trump become president. He would stop the dilution/immigration. Appoint special prosecutors and investigators. Fire bureaucrats and appoint pro-America people to lead the government offices. He would get us out of toxic UN organization. He would stop or severely impact a dozen or more international grifts against the U.S. They can't let him win. If he gets past the Lawfare gauntlet they will steal the election again. Assassination isn't out of the question. Trump could even "die suddenly".

News stories on climate doom ..........It's the new "emergency" plandemic to help keep the grifters from starving and locking the rest of us down.
"Climate Change" isn't alarming enough.
I have only seen the term "Climate Crisis" for a couple of weeks now but we have now entered the era of "Climate Boiling". The desperate cry of global boiling QUOTE: Amid a heat wave, UN chief announced, “The era of global warming has ended; the era of global boiling has arrived.” https://donsurber.substack.com/p/global-boiling-sure-is-cold They crank up the emergency when the grifters need the money for the new electric car and the trip to Gstaad.

Woodward and Bernstein got their information from an FBI insider that leaked. Now the FBI leaks from one end to the other and "crickets". What a difference a few decades makes. A black professor included the point that American slaves learned skills while slaves that helped them to survive when they were freed of slavery. I would assume this would include the 100's of thousands of indentured servants who immigrated from European countries who served out their indenture and were then freed and survived by their wits and abilities. But the left disagrees. Their position seems to be that "black" slaves learned nothing! And to say that black slaves learned anything of value is "racist". Is their position that the black slaves were incapable of learning? I don't think anyone is on the bandwagon that the indentured servants didn't learn anything useful. Why is that? Is there some kind of consensus on the left that white immigrants/slaves/indentured were intelligent and blacks were not?
There is an interesting piece from the Charleston Athenaeum Press today. Titled "Slavery in fact and fiction, southern slavery as it really was, guest post by Leonard M "Mike" Scruggs. There is other content before this post related to the reconciliation monument at Arlington Nat. Cemetery.
The article is comprised of stories by the WPA writers project that interviewed surviving ex-slaves during the 1930's. I haven't yet read all of it but it is quite interesting comparing their lives to those of whites. It is source material so I find it far more useful than todays university rhetoric.
