Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Why do so many people want the government to determine what is true?

Why do so many people appear to want a government to determine what is true?  Strange, especially in the USA.


As American-bred, I never trust government. Government is another special interest group. Government people lie all the time, for their greater good.

When government is their largest source of income they would naturally want government to be their "truth" source.

Because they don't believe in religion any more. Very, very few people are interested in discovering the truth for themselves, questioning everything, and slowly building a coherent model of the world in their mind. It is more comfortable for them to not have to deal with it.

We all take shortcuts, of course, but many want one that gets them off the hook completely, right away. It frees up more time for eating and watching TV, where minor gratifications are more or less assured and easily gained.

If one worships Government then it naturally follows that one would believe them and want the heretic thoughts banned. That explains the 81% of democrats that want "fake information" banned.

The 48% of Republicans that want "fake information" banned defies my ability to explain.

Because of who controls politics in this country they are advocating having their own side of the arena of ideas shut down.

Why would they want that? Are they that stupid?

Most people mistakenly believe their version of the truth will also be the governments version of the truth. And then they protest "If only Stalin knew!" when it bites them in the butt. But most people have to believe somebody's in charge, it's more comforting to believe in malignant forces being in charge than that everything's just spontaneous order. For these people, government's in charge because things are supposed to be that way.

Were one to recognize universal truths in actions, attitudes, and ethics, one might find oneself at odds and in default. If one adheres to "government" truths and at odds, one might hope to change "government" without changing oneself.
