Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Greenland

Greenland is the largest island on the planet. It's a country, sort-of. Part of the Kingdom of Denmark.


Guess the population.


What its largest town? 


Was it green during viking times, or was that marketing?


Answers below the fold - 


Population around 55,000, and declining.


Nuuk, pop. around 18,000.


Nope, probably not.

Question: When Antarctica melts and the seas rise by hundreds of feet and the Earth's temperature rises by hundreds of degrees, will Greenland out of necessity become the new Tokyo or will it all be underwater?

Jared Diamond spent a lot of time on Greenland's settlement in his book Collapse. His chronicle of the advance, and then slow collapse of Greenland's Norse society was based upon its being initially forested and with grass resources to allow for herd development. The slowly advancing return of the cold, coupled with the loss of their wood source due to over-harvesting, and the eventual collapse of their economy is what eventually drove most of them away, if I recall correctly.

Back in around 2004 the Minnesota History Museum had a large exhibit dealing with the warm period when farming was possible in Greenland. It was well done. Not controversial either.
