We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Love/Hate this song. Great tune, great vocals, tremendous buildup and finish. But, man, it is elitist as hell. "Who will provide the grand design? What is yours and what is mine?" You can be damn sure Don Henley had himself in mind for that role.
She came from Providence
One in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang
Heavy in the air
She packed her hopes and dreams
Like a refugee
Just as her father came
Across the sea
She heard about a place
People were smiling
They spoke about the red man's ways
And how they loved the land
And they came from everywhere
To the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand
Or a place to hide
Down in the crowded bars
Out for a good time
Can't wait to tell you all
What it's like up there
And they called it paradise
I don't know why
Somebody laid the mountains low
While the town got high
And then the chilly winds blew down
Across the desert
Through the canyons of the coast
To the Malibu
Where the pretty people play
Hungry for power
To light their neon way
And give them things to do
Some rich men came and raped the land
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes
And, Jesus, people bought 'em
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun
Sinking in the sea
You can leave it all behind
And sail to Lahaina
Just like the missionaries did
So many years ago
They even brought a neon sign
"Jesus is coming"
They brought the white man's burden down
Brought the white man's reign
Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier
But we have got to make it here
We satisfy our endless needs
And justify our bloody deeds
In the name of destiny
And in the name of God
And you can see them there
On Sunday morning
And stand up and sing about
What it's like up there
They call it paradise
I don't know why
You call someplace paradise
Kiss it goodbye
I don't know why it's somehow cool to hate on the Eagles, they were a pretty good band and this is one of my favorite numbers. Sure, it's preachy and hypocritical and Hemley is a horse's ass, but still.
Raconteur GVDL! I was just thinking about him yesterday and there are some nature wallpapers grabbed from there.
The best road trip ever as a lil' shaver was all Eagles in the Winnebago, too young to drive, Pappy still offered.
Learned how to read maps, recon, avoid riptides, on that golden trip.
I still listen to Eagles when heading out West.
Not so much now that CO is Commierado.
Remember Don Henley-Dirty Laundry from 1982 right up there with Iggy Pop-Watching the News for way ahead of the curve regarding the dumbing down caused by 24-7 enemedia.
Pretty sure you can’t leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina anymore
Maui seems broken
Moved there in the early 70’s
The Jesus coming soon sign was there
