We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
We're very fond of them down here as migrating birds, so big and beautiful. They can't be hunted here, but there are hunting seasons for them elsewhere, and I had some once--delicious like a big steak, rather like domestic duck.
Grew up in Nebraska - the cranes were amazing but not endangered. Occasionally a very endangered Whooper would be amongst them which was huge news.
They have been fair game in Mexico for as long as I can remember.
I have a pair that has been coming back to our farm for the past 6 years. When they arrive in the spring they stand in the driveway and yell at me to come feed them. They nest out behind the barn near the pond and usually have one chick. One year they raised 2. Every fall I hope to see them come back. It will be sad when they don't. ---ken
