Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Change the name of Dulles airport to Trump airport, and every head in the swamp would explode. Problem solved.
'Google CEO says he doesn't 'fully understand' how new AI program Bard works after it taught itself a foreign language it was not trained to and cited fake books to solve an economics problem'
SkyNet is becoming self-aware. Google must have used a very old dataset to train that AI, because back in the days the media-bureaucratic complex used to rely on fake science to push their ideas. No doubt a more modern AI would have solved the economic problem by claiming everything is racist.
On a related note: did you hear the joke about the mega corporation that spend billions on business intelligence, and then concluded that a hiring a pervert to promote their beer brand was the obvious way to go? With Artificial Intelligence being ushered in, seemingly at full throttle and with little consideration for its implications, and with each breathless story being given top billing in our electronic billboards on all forms of media, pretty soon debate will become something we fondly recall as a memory.
It's going to become even harder to distinguish real stories from completely confected ones that were derived wholly from machine imagination. Every discussion will begin with establishing that the story under discussion is actually a real one. We will be spending all of our time proving bona fides, that what we are arguing about is a real thing. People will cry out for a Ministry of Truth for assistance. Elon is right. Good points Aggie.
And yet haven't we been trying to discern accuracy of stories written by Artificial Intelligence journalists for decades? Russia collusion, Steele Dossier, Climate Change, COVID stories, Hurricane Katrina and on and on. How would AI make this any different? You can bet that the corporate media/political complex will always be headed in the wrong direction. Take the less traveled road.
re Elon Musk Sounds The Alarm During Tucker Carlson Interview, Says AI Has Potential To Destroy Civilization
And how would that be different than what the Ruling Class in the West is doing right now? The Office of the Public Advocate is closed to the public and it's never been more efficient or worked more smoothly to deal with the problems of the public. It's been a total success!
Reads like something from the Soviet Union. Communist governments 101.
AI is "programmed". It has been given direction by those who programmed it. If you took two disparate groups of programmers to create two versions of AI. You would see two different results from those AI programs. While it might be possible to program an AI system to be truly neutral and honest it seems unlikely simply because of human nature.
A simple proof of this is Googles search engine. Try searching for something and you will get first; paid ads, then the left wing version of the story. Go to the second page, first an ad or two, then some of the same left wing links. Also note that on the first of a search it might say something like 186,000 results, but when you begin going through the pages it suddenly ends at the 7th page. where were the rest of those 186000 results? You have been AI'ed. Another way to look at AI is to compare it with Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a good source of information unless you are looking for something political or controversial and then it is either intentionally wrong or censored. The problem with AI is that you will not know what it hides from you or how it misleads you. Will big Pharma be able to sell it's preferred drugs through AI advice? Will innocent people be maligned? Will foreign advocates or enemies use it to weaken or destroy us? Will our children be dumbed down and unable to know real from fake? The thing is you won't know, all you will have is someone's preferred answers to your questions. Re: $29 ham sandwich
Why would anyone expect a person to make a better choice of a sandwich when they make such terrible choices for politicians? Re: $29 ham sandwich
Bragg would have had a better case against that sandwich than Trump. UN agencies say “consensual” sex with kids should be decriminalized in new report

I am retired and we make our own lunch. Sometimes it's a sandwich and a fairly decent ham and cheese sandwich probably costs us under $2 to make at home. I grew up in the 40's and 50's and everyday I would make a sandwich to carry to school. So anyone paying $30+ for a sandwich does so because they want to. Don't bother complaining because the solution is so obvious that to complain about it makes you look dumb. Either enjoy the fact that you have so much money that you can throw it away on a $30 sandwich OR make them yourself.

I have embraced the power of AND, thereby enjoying the $30 and the ham sandwich. "So anyone paying $30+ for a sandwich does so because they want to."
Yes. It's called discretionary spending. The only way to end $30 sandwiches in a free market is for enough consumers to simply not buy one. I suspect a steady barrage of public ridicule "Look at that dumbazz friggin' hipster and his overpriced sandwich!" might be a motivator as well.

I live in a county where a couple of the cities are annually on those Best Places to Raise Kids, Safest Places..., etc., lists. And of course they were places where democrats didn't even run candidates because why bother. Now you see the out of state plates from people fleeing the blue mess they've helped create to come poop in our nest. I give it ten years, tops, until the standard of living here starts circling the drain because they'll turn it purple, and leftists only destroy things.
