Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

My latest energy bill here in Colorado, showed a 10°F colder average temperature form the same time last last year. Have the ruling class already fixed the climate? All we had to do was line the pockets of politicians and special interest groups with trillions of make believe money! Who knew that utopia only costs 33 trillion of debt? Of course my energy costs have exploded, but I guess that is a small price to pay to fix the climate. I wish they could tell me what the optimal earth temperature should be.
Curious, I asked a climatetous how the temperature could be lower than the previous year, I thought it was global warming? Oh you ignorant fool, he said. It is climate change! Extreme weather has always been the predicted result of human activity. Well, I said, I don’t remember there being a prediction of cold, snowy weather for this year. That’s because you are not privy to all the climate models, when the public has a need to know we’ll tell you. That’s like telling me that you predicted the score of a football game, after the game is complete. It’s science, he says. What do you know about science? Not much, I guess. It ain't science but it's usually accurate.
https://www.farmersalmanac.com/farmers-almanac-releases-an-extreme-winter-forecast-for-2022-23 As laid out in a series of papers, the core thesis is that the warming Arctic could be making the polar jet stream — and the stratospheric polar vortex it encircles — more unstable and variable.
I remember years ago the first time I heard the term "polar vortex" I did some checking on it and came across some article about a novice climatologist making that exact argument. But no less than Micheal Mann scoffed at her, saying the climate models already showed the opposite, that global warming would cause warming air from the tropics to be swept up to the polar regions and restrict the polar air to a smaller area. I remember this so well because the author of the piece commented that this made sense since warm air rises and it was obvious tropical air would rise up to engulf the arctic air. . My head nearly exploded from the sheer stupidity of somebody thinking they were qualified to comment on the science when they didn't even realize that the North Pole isn't "up" relative to space. Jerryskids: Micheal Mann scoffed at her, saying the climate models already showed the opposite, that global warming would cause warming air from the tropics to be swept up to the polar regions and restrict the polar air to a smaller area.
Do you have a citation for that? (Fun fact: scientists can be wrong.) Cohen et al., Linking Arctic variability and change with extreme winter weather in the United States, Science 2021. "scientists can be wrong"
Almost everything we believed in the 18th century has been proved to be wrong. About half of it was revived and proved to be true again. And about half of that was again proved wrong. This includes the lofty sciences like physics but not so much the non-sciences like weather and climate. Indeed weather is not a science. It is closer to gambling in a horse race. You watch what is happening in real time and you make a guess on what will happen in the future. Wrong 50% of the time. At least the big bang theory, the biggest most significant scientific study is solid. Oops it was wrong too. Oops now it's right again. Oops npo it's not now there were multiple big bangs. Oops, maybe not. Hell! We don't even know for sure if Biden won. Oops, actually we do know he lost... OneGuy: Almost everything we believed in the 18th century has been proved to be wrong.
Scientists in the 18th century knew all sorts of scientifically accurate facts about the universe. That doesn't mean no progress has been made. It's the "Relativity of Wrong". OneGuy: Indeed weather is not a science. Weather is a phenomenon. Meteorology is a science. And weather prediction is more accurate today than it was even thirty years ago. Jerryskids: I remember this so well because the author of the piece commented that this made sense since warm air rises and it was obvious tropical air would rise up to engulf the arctic air.
That is odd. The polar vortex is driven by the temperature differential between the Arctic and mid-latitudes. The Arctic is warming faster than the mid-latitudes, reducing the differential. Due to this, the polar vortex is less well defined, so the jet stream meanders more. Earle: Even more odd is that hot air rises upward, not northward.
When the polar vortex is weaker, warmer air from the south will move northward, and cooler air from the north will move southward. We went to Ireland and visited New Grange and the surrounding megalithic sites. For humans to be able to move the massive stones over many miles before the wheel was invented is almost unbelievable. Guides said they brought the massive stones by river with only hide and wood frame boats. It makes one wonder about alien visitors all those years ago as some claim. Have wanted since to put our names in the lottery for a chance to be in New Grange for the sunrise at Winter Solstice but what happens if you get selected and spend all that money to travel and you get a rainy cloudy morning?
QUOTE: The Jan6th Committee reminds America that we can never again allow a small band of unarmed protesters to conquer the largest military power in the history of human civilization by sauntering through the Capitol rotunda and taking selfies. We were so close to losing everything. Capitol Riot QUOTE: CINNA THE POET: Truly, my name is Cinna. First Citizen: Tear him to pieces; he's a conspirator. CINNA THE POET: I am Cinna the poet, I am Cinna the poet. Fourth Citizen: Tear him for his bad verses, tear him for his bad verses. CINNA THE POET: I am not Cinna the conspirator. Fourth Citizen: It is no matter, his name's Cinna; pluck but his name out of his heart, and turn him going. Third Citizen: Tear him, tear him! "Hang Mike Pence!" Nah! The Quibble-DickZ quote Shakespeare's fictional characters trying and failing to make some kind of cogent point.
Laughable. Earle: advocating violence I see.
Quite the contrary. We noted the history of how riots in the largest military power in the history of human civilization eroded the foundations of that republic. By the way, the incident with Cinna was not a dramatic contrivance by Shakespeare. Helvius Cinna was murdered by the mob at Caesar’s funeral, in a case of mistaken identity.
Y'all quoted Shakespeare from his play.
Again Quibble-DickZ prove what pedantic little twitZ they are. What the FBI and the intelligence community has done is an actual insurrection. Those good Americans who demonstrated against the stolen election on Jan 6th were wrongly punished and the real insurrectionists will go free. What a sad state of affairs.
