Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

America was supposed to be a great melting pot of people and ideas. It is not. It's freedoms allow that to happen but also allow the exact opposite. Most Americans of European descent consider themselves to have "melted" into "just" Americans. Not Swedish-Americans or English-Americans or German-Americans but just Americans. But many "Americans" and many non-citizens defines themselves as something else. They are African-Americans or Mexican-Americans or Chinese-Americans and their allegiance is divided as well putting America second to their identity. As such they work closely with others who identify like them to subvert and extort the "American" ideology to bow to them. For them you are either one of them or you are the enemy.
This fact of life is where most of racism comes from today. Racism is a useful tool to extort power and money and it unifies your own tribe against "the enemy" i.e. America. This isn't going to change as long as it is so effective. Unless and until all Americans begin to see themselves as Americans first and not "African" or Hispanic" it will only get worse. Define worse: Worse would be if a racist group is elected to government and they weaponize it to extort money from Americans (reparations) which cause innocent Americans who are not the favored race to lose their life savings, perhaps their home to pay off the favored race. Does anyone think this will work? Do you think giving a large sum of money to people based on race will somehow make everyone equal? Do you actually think that money will be invested and spent well so that they become "equal" or would you imagine it would all be pissed away in a few weeks of orgies and drinking? And what then? If the aggrieved racial group is still not equal shouldn't there be a reparations 2.0... and then 3.0... And after the precedent is set wouldn't there be riots and violence to demand and get their just reparations? Reparations is merely extortion and it cannot end well. Potter: "Yes, sir, trapped into frittering his life away playing nursemaid to a lot of garlic-eaters."
garlic eater
A term Japanese use when referring to Koreans. This is based on Japan rarely (if ever) using Garlic, while Koreans use it quite frequently. Japanese chefs often refer to Korean food as "the meal of a garlic eater" OneGuy: "garlic eater"
Potter, of course, was slurring Italians. In the spirit of Christmas past, some things never change, including the decrying of immigrants. Were the immigrants legal or illegal immigrants?
indyjonesouthere: Were the immigrants legal or illegal immigrants?
Immigration status clearly didn't matter to Potter. Nor was it part of OneGuy's point about African Americans and other ethnic minorities. Potter was a xenophobe. Were the "garlic eaters" xenophobes too?
Answer carefully because many here grew up with first or second generation Italians and they were as unwelcoming to non-Italians as others were to Italians. It was only as you came together and became friends and enjoyed things in common that the negative impressions disappeared. And that is the point!!! You cannot be a "-American" and expect "Americans" to not consider your opinion of yourself and them to be xenophobic or worse.

"Get smart about early voting..."
Well again the Republican party is the stupid party. The entire purpose of early voting and vote by mail and the other various voting tricks is to enable cheating. IF voting was honest WHY would voting early get you elected while not voting early cause you to lose. Here is the elephant in the room; The Republicans were so happy to get rid of Trump that they decided to not look into the most blatant voter cheating in American history. What did that get them? They lst the red wave in 2022 to voting fraud. NOW thewy want you to believe that if you had only voted early we would have won... The stupid runs deep in establishment Republicans. End all early voting, end all (almost all) mail in voting, make it a felony to have another persons ballot, require paper ballots only and every ballot has a serial number just as a dollar bill does. All ballot counting must be done under supervision of citizens and videotaped. We keep attributing stupid when what it truly is is malice. The establishment republicans want the same big government as the left, they just go about with different policies, and are not as out in the open about it. We don’t have an opposition party in America. We need a new party.
As big and diverse as USA is, me thinks we need at least 5, 6, or seven political parties.
RL: As big and diverse as USA is, me thinks we need at least 5, 6, or seven political parties.
The U.S. system is structured to inhibit multiple parties, such as with first past the post elections. JustMe: IF voting was honest WHY would voting early get you elected while not voting early cause you to lose.
Because many Democratic-leaning voters work on election day, are often single, a woman, and may have children at home. In addition, in minority areas, voter waits are often hours long. So, such a voter has to work, go home to fix dinner for the kids, find a sitter, then stand in line to vote. That reduces turnout of such voters. Early voting means more of these people can vote. Make election day a holiday or have it on Saturday.
With all printed ballots no line at the machines, take your ballot, mark it, drop it in the box, no line, no waiting, problem solved. In all honesty it is more likely that Republican voters are workers and the Democrats just don't want to get out of bed to go vote. Paper ballots mean more of all voters can vote. It is the machines that is the bottle neck. JustMe: Make election day a holiday
Sure. But working people, especially single parents with children may still have to work on holidays. JustMe: With all printed ballots no line at the machines, take your ballot, mark it, drop it in the box, no line, no waiting, problem solved. There's always waiting, because voters have to check in. And with short staffing, it can lead to long waits, especially in underfunded neighborhoods. Republicans have long resisted changes to make it easier to vote, especially for minorities. In any case, your original question was answered. Short staffing is the result of voting jurisdictions being unprepared. A failure to be prepared should result in replacement of the unprepared along with monetary fine.
It is easier to vote than to stand in line at a grocery store to pay for your groceries with food stamps.
indyjonesouthere: Short staffing is the result of voting jurisdictions being unprepared. A failure to be prepared should result in replacement of the unprepared along with monetary fine.
Sure. The way to fix chronic underfunding is by imposing additional costs. indyjonesouthere: It is easier to vote than to stand in line at a grocery store Lines for voting in minority neighborhoods were up to eight hours in 2020. But, you did raise a good point. The single parent has to work, go grocery shopping, pick up the kids at daycare, cook for the kids, find a sitter, go to the polls, then wait in line to vote. Again, the question is why early voting results in a different pattern of electoral results, and that has been sufficiently explained. If they can afford ballot collection boxes all over the district they can afford proper staffing. They could even use some of those Zuckerbucks for staffing. Even Soros could fund staffing.

The voting lines are long only because they have malfunctioning voting machines, shortages of ballots, and unorganized staff. And if election day is a holiday we have none of the other problems. Get in line, mark the ballot and watch the results that night...just as it was always done.

And why are these same people in charge of that voting district? Are there any more excuses to continue failed elections? Elections can be held on one day, as the SCOTUS ruled, and be done competently, but only if those running the election are held accountable by fines or sentencing. Does it matter to you which party has power in the voting district?

It wasn't a failed election. Some people were inconvenienced, but everyone had the chance to vote. indyjonesouthere: Elections can be held on one day, as the SCOTUS ruled Uh, no. The Supreme Court ruled that the decision can't be made before election day, not that people couldn't vote early. It's like white people just discovered what Blacks have experienced for generations.

Republicans were found to have intentionally crafted the law to discriminate against Blacks. This is the inherent problem with the right-wing movement for voter ID. While it is certainly possible to craft voter ID laws that help ensure security of the election, Republicans keep pushing to use these laws to limit the franchise.

Voter ID doesn't eliminate anyone but illegal voters. Is there even a state that doesn't provide free ID's. Does NC provide free ID'? Does that free ID prove citizenship. Are minorities the only group that seem unable to get an ID and show citizenship. Do they need to teach that information in every grade in public school? Are teachers unable to instruct students on obtaining voter credentials?

Analysis presented in court found twice as many legal Blacks voters lacked ID acceptable under the law than whites. indyjonesouthere: That was also a democrat majority court. The finding of fact was made by a lower state court. The federal courts also reached the same conclusion--the rules were intentionally crafted with discriminatory intent. We agree that voter ID can be implemented fairly. But Republicans always use the opportunity to limit minority participation.

“Voters in precincts with more minorities experienced longer waits. Voters in precincts with higher percentages of minority voters tended to have fewer machines.” See Famighetti et el., Election Day Long Lines: Resource Allocation, Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, empirical findings. Minorities are more likely to vote Democratic. Consequently, it is harder for Democratic-leaning voters to cast their ballot, which will reduce their participation. The question was, “IF voting was honest WHY would voting early get you elected while not voting early cause you to lose.” The answer is because changes in the ease of voting will change the partisan composition of those who actually cast ballots.

At some point participating in the franchise is important to you, or it’s not, and making the vote a ridiculous free-for-all isn’t the answer. Hoss: At some point participating in the franchise is important to you, or it’s not, and making the vote a ridiculous free-for-all isn’t the answer.
Making the act of voting less onerous is not the same as making it a “free-for-all.” Nor should voting be harder for minorities or people who live in poor neighborhoods. Like a good lock, the ballot system should be easy for valid voters yet secure against fraud.

'For many Trump supporters, it was his policies that mattered.'
Saw a bumper sticker a few weeks ago that said, "I could sure go for some mean Tweets and low gas prices right about now." Yup. It doesn't matter who the Republican nominee for 2024 is. He or she will get the same unhinged treatment Trump has received for the last six or seven years.
Nope. It will be, must be Trump unless he dies or clearly removes himself to the kingmaker position.
DeSantis does not have the pockets to survive long periods of prolonged attack. He's great - but he's being offered up by the never-Trumpers and other quislings who assess him (probably correctly) as a less formidable opponent. And the switch is guaranteed to decrease the numbers and energy of the Maga base. It has to be Trump just like it had to be Netanyahu here in Israel - because the corruption and charaxter assassination of cancel culture have become the issue... Combined with real evidence of treason in international affairs. We Israelis flailed through a series of ineffectual elections that allowed more masks to drop and more citizens to her red pilled. Now we finally have a broad patriotic conservative government. The collapse of the Inquisition against Netanyahu - and the corruption it revealed - were central to this process. Americans may have to endure the same. In any event, nothing will really happen under a Cruz or DeSantis until a significant part of the population is red pilled - at which point Trump will be aore viable candidate than ever. What if you lived and worked in a town where there was a single major business model. Lots of companies but all producing the same thing. You worked for this industry as a contractor and your income depended on the business owners buying and marketing your product. But all the owners are in a club and they all know each other and they collude in their business to benefit themselves but to harm their clients by controlling the value of the clients work. This works very well for them they are all rich and doing well but you have to go to them hat in hand to sell your product. And if you upset anyone of them then they all turn against you.
Tough gig! You can complain, shine some light on it, demand an investigation, perhaps they are even breaking the law to function in this way. The press would probably jump on this story. Lawyers would take it up and courts would find some problems with what is going on. It would be big news. Now imagine that all these businessmen are Jewish, the club they all go to and talk about business is a synagogue, and your name is Kanye West. Sorry, none of those common sense rules apply, you touched the 3rd rail and you are now a social outcast and anyone is allowed to punish you forever.
