Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I can't believe that a group of people actually took the time to figure out the background identity of baseball players playing in the World Series. Would these same people care if there wasn't a white player on a championship basketball team? Garbage people think of garbage. The Left is full of racists who project their racist views on the rest of society.
I don't understand why we allow American companies to hire foreign workers.
JustMe: I don't understand why we allow American companies to hire foreign workers.
So, much for "small government conservatism." Drawing from a pool of 7,800 million people will yield more talent than drawing from a pool of 330 million people, especially if the former encompasses that latter. Who pays the price? Let employers pay $1000 a day for a foreign worker to cover the costs. Require them to spend no more than 180 in the U.S. Require a visa that enforces their exit from the U.S. when their job ends.
JustMe: Who pays the price? Let employers pay $1000 a day for a foreign worker to cover the costs.
What cost? Foreign baseball players pay US federal and state taxes on their earnings. JustMe: Require a visa that enforces their exit from the U.S. when their job ends. Professional baseball players hold P-1 visas which are typically for five years. "What cost? "
The cost of 5 million illegals since Biden stole the office. All the H1B employees and their families. What! YOU didn't know about this? "Professional baseball players hold P-1 visas which are typically for five years. So YOU are telling us none of them stayed past 5 years or became citizens???? JustMe: The cost of 5 million illegals
The original question concerned foreign baseball players, to which you said, "I don't understand why we allow American companies to hire foreign workers." JustMe: The cost of 5 million illegals Businesses are not allowed to hire immigrants lacking documentation. The flip side is that everybody likes cheap lettuce. JustMe: So YOU are telling us none of them stayed past 5 years or became citizens???? Ex-baseball players certainly have the right to apply for citizenship, but there is a process involved. What part of "I don't understand why we allow American companies to hire foreign workers." don't you understand?
"Businesses are not allowed to hire immigrants lacking documentation." LOL! You're joking, right! "Ex-baseball players certainly have the right to apply for citizenship, " THAT is the problem. Our government; for the people, by the people, should be FOR THE PEOPLE and not for the rest of the planet. Our leaders are traitors selling us down the road and destroying our future.

So you don't think anyone should be able to apply for U.S. citizenship? JustMe: Our government; for the people, by the people, should be FOR THE PEOPLE and not for the rest of the planet. When Lincoln said that there were almost no legal restrictions on immigration.

"So you don't think anyone should be able to apply for U.S. citizenship?"
I don't think that our elected and hired leaders should be able to sell or give away citizenships. I don't think NGOs should be able to control who gets citizenship. I think that all legal immigration should be halted until we find and deport all non-citizens and all immigrants have learned English. THEN I think it should be put to the voters if they want immigration to continue. I think not a single penny should be spent on legal or illegal immigrants EXCEPT to find them and send them home. "When Lincoln said that there were almost no legal restrictions on immigration." So what! Is there a point there?

Only the U.S. government acting under laws passed by the Congress can naturalize citizens. JustMe: So what! You cited someone who oversaw unrestricted immigration.

"So, much for "small government conservatism."
Whatever. You say this every time a conservative puts forth any government regulation. Conservatism does indeed want a smaller less powerful central government but it's totally legitimate to argue over what that might looks like. Your rhetoric is wearisome. eeyore: Conservatism does indeed want a smaller less powerful central government but it's totally legitimate to argue over what that might looks like.
Except that's not accurate. Many conservatives advocate for a greater role for government, including over immigration, but also many other aspects of society, a movement called social conservatism. This is the left’s America, merit/capability doesn’t matter, the only thing that matters is how many boxes are checked on the intersectionality scores.
Hoss: This is the left’s America, merit/capability doesn’t matter, the only thing that matters is how many boxes are checked on the intersectionality scores.
This is no longer competitive. Diversity and a deep talent pool are essential to modern business and are necessary components of the drive towards excellence. Sorry, but the fact is that some kid in India wants your job. Try harder. We kneel before the Gods at the Altar of Diversity, but having foreign black baseball players but no American black baseball players on the World Series teams is specifically unacceptably non-diverse.
If black baseball fans are so unappreciative of the sport that they refuse to support it, they must be punished. Make them watch hockey until they get their minds right.
We all saw the people being pushed off the Subway platforms or beaten almost to death by career felons and the grandmothers shot on the street and there was a collective "ho hum" from our political class. But now MY GOD Paul Pelosi was hit with a hammer in his home!! Oh the humanity!! Please stop the "political" violence!! This is almost as bad as sending illegal aliens to Martha's Vineyard!!
I am sick and tired of our tone deaf political class. OneGuy: But now MY GOD Paul Pelosi was hit with a hammer in his home!!
If it was a random attack, then, beyond the personal consequences, the event just has celebrity value. But, Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House. If the attack was targeted, then it was an attack against the US Constitution and the American people. So lets see what we know about this so far:
1. The "attacker" was in his underwear! 2. The attacker is a male prostitute! 3. When Paul Pelosi called 911 he said "David was a friend"! 4. The Hammer was Pauls and he had it in his hands when the police showed up and "friend David" took it from him and hit Paul with it. 5. The police are being intentionally quiet about what happened, just as they were about Paul's DUI. Kinda similiar to the beating Harry Reid took from his treadmill.
mudbug: And what if Pelosi knew knew his attacker …
Pelosi said he didn't know the attacker. QUOTE: 911 operator to police: He states there is a male in the home and that he is going to wait for his wife. He stated that he doesn't know who the male is but that his name is David and that he is a friend. He sounded somewhat confused. That would suggest Pelosi was trying to talk to the intruder to stop or delay any attack. The police say the intruder was targeting Nancy, so it is possible he may have been convinced to just leave. Anon: The police are being intentionally quiet about what happened QUOTE: “This was intentional,” {San Francisco Police Chief Bill} Scott told reporters, adding politicians’ families “don’t sign up for this.” “It is wrong, and everyone should be disgusted,” he added. “It is wrong, and everyone should be disgusted,” he added.
Christine -Rand Paul's neighbor was right- Pelosi, couldn't be reached for comment. He sounded confused... likely no breathalyzer required but I think he needs better friends.

"He stated that he doesn't know who the male is but that his name is David and that he is a friend. He sounded somewhat confused."
Z: That would suggest Pelosi was trying to talk to the intruder to stop or delay any attack. The police say the intruder was targeting Nancy, so it is possible he may have been convinced to just leave. He knew his name and told the police he was a friend. It could indicate that he knew him previously. The AP reported that Pelosi told the DePeppe that he had to use the bathroom as a pretext to call the police (with no apparent argument from DePeppe). It doesn't sound like he was in imminent harm from DePeppe at that time. The attacker was arrested in his underwear. There isn't enough information to get a very clear picture of any motivations and certainly not of any prior relationship between Pelosi and DePeppe (should there be any) but what is very unlikely is that it was political violence perpetrated by Republicans or Trump loyalists as asserted by Democrats. mudbug: He knew his name and told the police he was a friend.
He also stated, "he doesn't know who the male is". The conversation was recorded as a 911 call, and the police say the intruder was targeting Nancy Pelosi. mudbug: but what is very unlikely is that it was political violence perpetrated by Republicans or Trump loyalists as asserted by Democrats. He was looking for "Nancy", so the intrusion was apparently targeted at Nancy Pelosi. The police investigation will presumably reveal more of the circumstances. Z: He also stated, "he doesn't know who the male is".
The fact that he subsequently said he knew his name and called him a friend discredits his statement that he "doesn't know who the male is." So he did know who he was at least to call him by name (one would think that was obvious) and for some reason called him a friend - a strange thing to call someone who is attacking you when you are asking the police for help. Whether DePeppe was a "real" friend where there was any warmth in their relationship but he was obviously known at some level to Pelosi. Also, according to Politico, an unidentified person let the police into the house. Whoever that was was not mentioned and apparently not charged by the police. So two other people besides Pelosi were in the house, at least one in his underwear, at the time the police were on the scene. This is sounding a lot less like a targeted attack by the minute. "Where's Nancy" could mean anything. It could mean that DePeppe knew her and expected her to be there or that he wanted to make sure she wasn't there. Another curiosity is that the police did not say that DePeppe broke into the house. In fact at the press conference, they refused to answer that question.

As far as I can tell, the original source for the claim that DePage 'broke in' to the Pelosi residence was the initial statement made by Nancy's spokesflack (link to AofSHQ thread that includes a screen capture of the statement). As you noted, the police at their presser said they conducted a welfare check, not a response to a B and E.

No. Because if you are trying to engage in conversation, you'll ask for his name and try to act friendly. mudbug: and for some reason called him a friend - a strange thing to call someone who is attacking you when you are asking the police for help. That's exactly what someone might do. The attack didn't occur until the police arrived. The police have also said, “This was not a random act. This was intentional." Of interest is that "Where's Nancy?" echos the language on J6. But, sure. The investigation is ongoing.

Of interest only to you and other left wing conspiracy theorists. There is not even a hint of any connection between DePeppe and any J6 participants, Republicans, or Trump other than in the silly imaginations leftists and the press (but I repeat myself) to tar Republicans or conservatives with innuendo without any basis in fact. It's much more likely that political violence comes from the left (eg. Shannon Brandt and James Hodgkinson).

The police say it was a targeted attack. The suspect was apparently into QAnon, election denialism, and other such conspiracy theories. However, we'll have to wait for more information before reaching any definitive conclusion on motive.

Regarding zoning, local interstate billboards say zoning is the problem as the Capitol City blob just expands out in every direction and animals have to go farther out to escape roadkill-o-rama.
Now the cookie cutter cutout particle board apartment compartments are overtaking everything as hundreds of thousands pour into what used to be rural route boonies back in the 1970's-1980's. Locals fought it and kept it at bay for ten years but most have moved away. Some irony as warehouse distribution centers now block the view of the cutesy three word subdivision sector names that reveal what was destroyed. We're noticing these pressures in our city as the cry is to increase density - supposedly more efficient or some such nonsense. What is NOT said is that increased density means less ground to grow trees and other greenery, and also turns neighbourhoods into worse than deserts, unable to absorb regular precipitation which then turns into overland flooding, usually into an innocent neighbour's basement because that house just happens to be on the downside of the road.
