Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Where do apples come from?

No, Eve did not eat an apple. It's called poetic license by the translator.


A small mountainside apple originated in the hills of Kazahistan. This heritage apple (in the Rose family) was probably the size of a rose hip. 


It took me decades to realize that I don't like apples unless they are cooked in some way. Occasionally a thin slice with some cheese.

My favorite fruit. I do have to say, though, that has to be the dorkiest version of Adam that I've ever seen, anywhere.

Given that Genesis is set about 6000 years in the past, there probably were real apples by then (though not the current giants).
And being written about 2500-3000 years ago in the current Middle East they would certainly have known what we'd recognise now as apples.

One of the many places where geology and archeology contradict biblical theory.

Of course the bible as a whole is mostly allegorical, and there's nothing wrong with that.
The problem as always is people taking allegory as literal truth and becoming dogmatic about it.

The actual Bible text never mentions the name of the fruit.

One Talmudic sage says it was the fig - hence they covered themselves with fig leaves.

Another sage quite interestingly states it was wheat.... thus connecting the "banishment from Eden" with the transition from what we would call hunter-gatherer isolation to agricultural society. The "garden" is then the first "paradise" - which comes from a Semitic word meaning "enclosure". The first agriculture Between The Rivers was nomads creating protected places for their flocks, and then bringing useful plants into the area.
