We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

No Longer Offering Pilot Jobs to White Men
I think our military should discriminate against white men. It isn't fair that they get all the glory. There should have been more women and minorities attacking the beach at Normandy. To try to bring social justice to this situation I think the next war should be fought using only women and minorities. Diversity is our strength!!
Democracy: As the USSR used to, Red China*, now, touts their soviet-style "democracy"; a representative system. In theory, the umpteen members of an agricultural commune vote on intramural policy; and a representative, or representatives to the next higher level. Ostensibly, this extends all the way up to the central government in Beijing, pronounced bay jing, not bay zhing a la Francais
Actually, the local stuff resembles the committee of the whole elections some unions use, where there is no secret ballot, subjecting voters to group pressure. Where there could be a secret ballot, the current chair and the central committee count the votes. Cue Stalin's vote count dictum.
* Red China, the so-called "People's Republic of China" (PROC, as in proctology), rules the mainland. Free China, the Republic of China (ROC), has it's capital on the ISLAND of Taiwan. Red China would like you to delegitimize the ROC by calling it "Taiwan". Don't.
Glad to see a Climate Debate finally happen, and kudos to the Manhattan Contrarian for bringing the issue to fruition. I suspect that Dressler took the invite because he's not the sharpest pro-Green climate scientist around, and hasn't left the echo chamber for a while, thus underestimating the shortcomings of his argument.
Big projects never proceed without engineering proof-of-concept and sound financial metrics on return, in the private sector. But as we have seen, they get money by the buckets based on hope and Unicorn Dust in the public policy world that shapes decision-making. We've also experienced the consequences. Europe's going to get ugly this winter, as Texas did a couple of seasons ago.
I read an interesting history on anti-nuclear activism that essentially links the anti-nuclear activism movement with the original efforts of environmental activism in the 60's / 70's, which (very surprisingly to me) is also closely linked with eugenics. Long read, but it does highlight some of the practical obstacles that will have to be overcome. Be Aware: The Green movement strongly objects to cheap, available energy for the masses. Keeping this in mind helps explain a lot of behaviors.
Paul Ehrlich (he of the embarrassingly-wrong-for-a-normal-person Population Bomb hysterics) actually said a source of cheap energy would be the worst sort of thing for Mankind to have. They really do loathe humans and wish most of us were dead.
The anti humanity that crept into GreenPeace is what encouraged Patrick Moore, a founding member, to leave. He has a lot to say that more people should listen to:
When you think about it, one movie did more damage to the nuclear energy sector than any other single source. The China Syndrome was fabricated histrionics. Unfortunately humanity will need to learn the lessons of green energy the hard way.
I’m old enough to have lived through at least 6 dooms days. I remember reading my favorite Ski magazine back in the late eighties. The article claimed, backed by all the climate scientists, how there would be no snow below 8,000 feet. This warning was supposed to have taken place in the 20 teens. It never happened.
However, we are now saved, at least for a few more years. The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act has appeased Mother Earth. Nancy Pelosi says so.
Nancy seems to believe that Mother Earth is angry at us mortals. She also claimed that hurricanes, earthquakes and even forest fires are the result of the anger. Here I thought Nancy claimed to be a Catholic. I think she is more aligned with Paganism. She obviously believes in child sacrifice. I wonder why that hasn’t appeased Mother Earth?
It is ironical that Lloyd Austin, the 4 times vaccinated secretary of defense, has become infected with covid for the 2nd time while the military still intends to kick out 40,000 healthy soldiers for not taking the ineffective vaccine. Virtually everything our government has done about covid has been wrong and they can't admit it so they must continue to do it.
The CDC is going to remake itself after it's disastrous performance dealing with the covid "pandemic". Who believes that the result will be a smarter better CDC??? IMHO I think that the thing that bothers them most was that they didn't have enough power over American's lives and their focus going forward will be to gain that power. They should have no power! Their job should be to give Americans the best advice that they can and then it is up to each of us as free people to make our own decisions.
The virus ran it's course. It still exists of course and will continue to infect and reinfect people. But it ran it's course in spite of everything the CDC and governors did or didn't do. The next virus that the communist in China create and release upon an unsuspecting world will most likely do the same, that is run it's course without regard to what CDC says or mandates.
What the CDC should do is to not try to make it much worse with lockdowns, mandates, masks and six foot distancing. For Christ sake if you don't know what you are doing shut up don't make it worse by sounding off with stupid mandates.
