Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Michael Mann, the epitome of the activist scientist, progenitor of the famous 'hockey stick' temperature plot that nobody else can replicate, yet it forms the basis of the IPCC diktat, and that only he guards as the self-appointed gatekeeper. Even after suing another scientist for libel (and losing), even after being instructed by the judge to disclose his data and methodology, Mann refuses. But: Why would a scientist refuse to disclose these things so that others can replicate and prove his results, why would a reputable scientist defy the scientific method? The picture of opaque, self-aggrandizing, politically-driven science.
Well put. Mann has made a pretty decent living off this dishonesty.
I knew some profs at UVa who were upset when a funding agency insisted that all of their Gov't funded relevant research (not doing climate research) data be archived and available.
These are smart guys, but they were pretty silent when I challenged them to provide a reason not to make that data available to the public agency that funded the work. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/former-u-va-climate-scientist-michael-mann-awarded-250-by-state-supreme-court/2014/07/16/10a75808-0c46-11e4-8c9a-923ecc0c7d23_story.html For the record, Mann's creation of his graph is explicitly fraud by definition for many scientific companies and organizations. A fact that zachriel never responds to. Aggie: Michael Mann, the epitome of the activist scientist, progenitor of the famous 'hockey stick' temperature plot that nobody else can replicate
In fact, multiple studies have confirmed Mann's findings, including PAGES 2k Consortium, Consistent multidecadal variability in global temperature reconstructions and simulations over the Common Era, Nature Geoscience 2019; and Neukom et al., No evidence for globally coherent warm and cold periods over the preindustrial Common Era, Nature 2019. QUOTE: reconstructions and simulations A computer model spits out what the programmers tell it to. Dr. Steve McIntyre (eviscerator of the origonal "hockey stick"): "“Kaufman’s proxies are fraught with defects. Kaufman has already acknowledged that one of his supersticks (Igaliku) was contaminated by modern agriculture; and that another non-H13 series (Hvitarvatn) was used upside down." Another Bust B. Hammer: "reconstructions and simulations" A computer model spits out what the programmers tell it to.
The reconstructions were based on empirical data, then they were compared to the simulations to see if they are consistent. They are. Furthermore, we cited PAGES 2k from 2019 not 2013. The earlier study concerned regional temperature reconstructions, while the latter study was much more comprehensive. B. Hammer: Dr. Steve McIntyre (eviscerator of the origonal "hockey stick"): "“Kaufman’s proxies are fraught with defects. Kaufman has already acknowledged that one of his supersticks (Igaliku) was contaminated by modern agriculture; and that another non-H13 series (Hvitarvatn) was used upside down." And they issued a corrigendum to the 2013 paper, which incorporated the issues with the Arctic data found by McIntyre. https://www.nature.com/articles/ngeo2566 None of that impacted the overall trend. The warming of the last 30 years is anomalous.

You post snark when you can't dig up an answer.
You have to dig for answers b/c you know nothing about science and can't answer anything yourself. Lying POS. They have been able to construct highly similar curves, not replicate the data. A simple question: Has Dr. Mann released his regression numbers yet, as instructed by the judge in his case, in the interest of the discovery that is required to progress his lawsuit (and also to replicate his data)? Why is that?
Aggie: They have been able to construct highly similar curves, not replicate the data.
Using completely independent means is the highest scientific standard. Aggie: A simple question: Has Dr. Mann released his regression numbers yet, as instructed by the judge in his case, in the interest of the discovery that is required to progress his lawsuit (and also to replicate his data)? Why is that? Have no idea. But it doesn't matter concerning the underlying scientific determination that recent global warming is anomalous, contradicting the claim about "the famous 'hockey stick' temperature plot that nobody else can replicate". On the contrary, discovery was at the heart of the libel case that Mann has lost. Discovery would mean that he must disclose his methodology, and that would include his regression numbers. He is unwilling to do this, unwilling to be transparent with the scientific method, unwilling to have other scientists retrace his steps and reproduce the results. And such, he has lost his libel case and has been forced to pay the legal costs of the defense.
Did you know that reproducibility of results is the single biggest problem affecting scientific research these days? The numbers are quite worrisome, especially where it concerns medical and environmental research. I'm not a math expert, but I understand that the regression numbers would provide an incontrovertible method for understanding whether Mann's original results were real, reflecting the data, or alternatively, faked. Makes a body wonder why they wouldn't be withheld, but in this, Mann is very consistent in his behaviors....

Aggie: On the contrary, discovery was at the heart of the libel case that Mann has lost.
That wasn't the claim, which was that no one could replicate the so-called hockey stick temperature plot (a simplification of the actual findings). The research has been replicated, many times. If your claim had been that Mann unreasonably delayed discovery in a libel suit, we wouldn't have responded.

If that was the claim, then Mann wouldn't have lost the case.
What's it like to be wrong (((zachriel)))? Cognitive decline can be avoided with simple everyday exercises, new study suggests
Interesting, if substantiated by further studies. The article, however, triggered one of my pet peeves about all Corporate Media: where are the sources? If the Wake Forest researchers have published their results, where is the link to the publication? Otherwise, all the online articles are just so much hearsay. Do journalists think we're just a bunch of uneducated rubes? 'Cause it's clear they are. You want sources? We got sources: Physical Training Against Brain Aging
Fun. Too bad the video had to add commentary.
What I will say is that cartoon mascots haven't been popular in a long time. Cereal, snacks, fruit drinks etc... I don't think today's audience of children responds well to such mascots. It was a very era specific thing, with kids infatuated w/ the new medium TV, family affluence, and marketers targeting them. Worked for adults some too: Mr. Clean, Jolly Green Giant, Pillsbury doughboy. Oddly enough, these days mascots do seem to work in Insurance. Flo, from Progressive Insurance, not a cartoon. The GEICO gekko essentially a cartoon. Surely the San Diego Unified School District realizes that the desire to eat causes obesity and that the desire to breath produces CO2 and will mitigate those instincts as well.
Minnesota revisionist history. I grew up in that area and New Ulm was the county seat. Fort Ripley was a park that we visited and enjoyed.
The Minnesota history we studied covered this event and pretty much as pointed out in the article. When did TPTB start revising the history to fit our current narrative of victimization at the hands of the white settlers? The only part that surprises me is that the Minneapolis mayor didn't join the governor on his ride. It also doesn't surprise me that WCCO was in on the "story". Surely the Minneapolis Trib and KSTP weren't left out of the revision. The media and the educators have again failed to deal with ALL of the real world. TANSTAAFL

Nations and countries are different things. You can argue that China is a country that spans more than just the Han nation, and that there is an Anglophone nation that includes the countries of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Much of the Brexit fracas is at it's base a disagreement about whether the UK should remain part of this national identity or adopt a common national identity with a united Contiental Europe. A young male distant family member was put on hormones to try and stop very early puberty. It totally messed up his mind and behavior. Pretty sad.
"San Diego Unified School District Will Teach Children That Heterosexuality is Oppressive – And Promote “Genderqueer,” “Non-Binary” Identities"
How can you take seriously anyone who finds reality oppressive? Concerning Revisionist History:
I live in Milford township, near New Ulm, Minnesota, perhaps ground zero in the 1862 war. I frequently stop at the Milford Monument that memorializes the settlers killed in that massacre. I occasionally find flowers left, presumably in their memory. I have also had occasion to visit the monument at Wood Lake battlefield and found written messages in Dakotah inserted in cracks in the stonework. Both are heartbreaking. Later this month I will attend tours and events sponsored by the Brown County Historical Society marking the 1862 war. I am also a member of the New Ulm Battery, a civilian militia artillery formed in 1863 for the defense of New Ulm. History here is not forgotten. William Faulkner said it best: "The past is never dead. It's not even past." Also worth noting in these uncertain times: Many of the settlers had no arms for self defense. Take that for what it's worth. |
