Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Tipping


My theory is that it is best to tip people, always.


Barber, delivery guy, food service person, lawn guys, garbage guys. And the Dunkin Donuts staff.  It makes everybody feel good.


That applies to the US.  It's different in Europe, where they often apply a service fee. Who knows who gets that money? In Europe, tip like a miser even if you feel otherwise.

If I've had really superlative service, I always try to walk with cash so that I can tip with real money rather than add it to the credit card tally. For some reason (a stupid one) I think it makes the transaction more real, but also, not knowing whether the establishment is above board with their treatment of the tips, it allows for putting the rewards where they perhaps more rightfully belong.

Amen, brother! Way too easy for the establishment or the IRS to interfere in a worker's business. Cash is like Bigfoot: leaves no footprints and doesn't make a sound.

At our house, regular service folks--house cleaner, yard guy, pool guy--get a nice Boxing Day envelope.

I used to wait tables at the Blue Point Oyster Bar in Providence in the Nineties, and the owners there used to deduct the credit card processing fee for the entire bill from our tip. It wasn’t illegal, but it wasn’t very ethical either.

We tipped our horse and trap driver in Ireland and he didn't know what to do. They either don't tip or it is included in their fares. He did a great job.

Tipping used to be necessary because the restaurants paid the workers so poorly. That is no longer true.

Restaurant waiters make half of minimum wage. Some states may have laws that require otherwise, but that's generally the hourly rate the restaurant is paying.

I don't know where you live to see that. I live in my trailer and travel all over and the going rate even for fast food workers is between $15-$22 an hour. Maybe in Mississippi they pay less than minimum but not anywhere lese I have been lately.

It's important to know the customs in the country that you visit. One night in Japan, after a very long taxi ride (got on the wrong train) when his meter pegged at 10,000 yen (about $100) even before he got to our hotel, I tried to offer the driver a tip for his consideration in picking us gaijin up and driving all that way. He acted like I'd tried to molest his wife or something-- appalled and insulted at the same time. I really like Japan, but it's different.
