We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Snowy egrets are a smaller species. They're often called "the bird with the golden slippers" because of their yellow feet.
The big ones (like the one in the pictures) are great egrets.
My favorite variety is the reddish egret. It does this goofy little dance as it stalks its prey in the shallows. It's easy to find videos of it. Unmistakable if you see one along the shoreline. Also beautiful breeding plumage.
We often see egrets and blue herons around the lakes here. It is an impressive thing to watch one of those birds get airborne. It is hard to believe that anything could fly so slowly. The atmosphere must seem thicker to them than it does to us.
