We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
re How Ben & Jerry’s plans on getting their cows to stop farting, burping
It may indeed reduce the farting. I doubt it helps the burping which, btw is where most of the bovine gases are emitted. Cows burp when they ruminate and there is nothing anyone can do about that. When cows eat, the food is not well chewed. It goes to the rumen where the microbes go to work on it. A few hours later it is burped back up. The cow chews it up and swallows it again. This process is also known as the cow chewing on her cud. It's a vital process of the digestive process and can't be changed.
The bottom line is, Ben and Jerry can tweak the diet, but the result will be lower milk production and particularly cream production.
If they think the higher cost of production is worth the PR, good for them.
The power to fire diversity bureaucrats. If you have diversity bureaucrats, you have already made your institution dysfunctional, at best, and more likely nothing more than a P.C. propaganda machine. It makes little difference whether it is an education, government, or corporate institution. Diversity destroys.
That's a neat story about the woman losing her osteoporosis - but I wonder why she is still using the same doctor? If I had a specialist that was completely disinterested in how I beat a serious medical condition through physical activity and no prescription drugs, they'd be gone before they took my blood pressure. There must be more to the story.
That's a good question about the woman's doctor. I'm the person who sent BD the link to the video and I had the same question while watching it. I've posted that question on the Starting Strength forums and will post the answer here, if/when I get a reply.
I noticed that the lady was deferring to her trainer, who clearly has strong opinions about things. It makes me wonder if she just traded one authority figure for another, which is why I wondered if there's more going on. Anyway, I hope it works out and continues to be a great result for her.
Exonerated criminal: It is good to continue to apply study and standards to see if we previously got things wrong and the system is unfair. But the Innocence Project is not looking for justice, it is looking for scalps, for showcase victories of prosecutions that did not get it entirely right. That may sound like a good thing for the system, and it is. But notice - they are not looking for the cases of greatest unfairness and innocent people who should be set free, which would be admirable. They are bottom-feeding to improve their batting average and attract donations from foundations. What they are doing is not evil, but it ain't the high virtue they want you to think it is. This case is typical for them.
