Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The multi million dollar award against Geico is absolutely asinine. Next some bimbo will file suit for her pregnancy due to the fact that the guy didn't use a condone when having sex in the back seat of his car. Shame on the jury and courts for awarding the settlement. Perhaps she picked it up somewhere else.

Looks like there is more to the story: Geico let the case go to arbitration and the arbitrator decided the award. Yeah. Lehto did an excellent job of explaining the law. While I think the claim and the award was stupid/ludicrous, the legality sure does seem rock solid. Geico? Learn a lesson there?
Too many juries look to any handy deep pocket to pay for all of life's troubles. We'd do better to pay our own expenses or--at the very least--to resolve to pay for those of our neighbors, instead of looking for strangers to cast the burden on.
Re: Scholars spend $500K in taxpayer funds to deconstruct whiteness in physics
I'll continue to take my physics from Richard Feymann thank you. https://www.feynmanlectures.caltech.edu/flptapes.html Re: Street Dogs of India
I had the good fortune to serve two years with the NATO regional HQ in Naples, Italy and observed the same docile, submissive behaviors by Neapolitan strays -- relaxing beneath the palms and enjoying their own form of la dolce vita. In fact, the Army 3-Star who served as our chief of staff once told us that if he had to be reincarnated, he wanted to come back as a Neapolitan parco dog! GEICO lost a lot of its rights in appeals when it went with an arbiter decision. Even a caveman could see that coming.
When was Putin ever pretending? I must've missed it. I did notice that he's looking pretty sturdy, despite screaming headlines that he was undergoing major surgery for a terminal disease a couple of weeks ago.
Russia's GDP: About $2 Trillion; Population about 145 million, with nobody favoring Ukranian rule. Ukraine's GDP: About $200 Billion, maybe slightly more this year thanks to Uncle Sam's largess. Population about 45 million, with a few million favoring Russian rule. But let's debate the war outcome. "America is Racist, Violent Country"
It is! Most shootings/murders are committed by blacks except in California where illegal aliens hold that honor. They are racist and violent. Most violent crime and rapes are committed by blacks and hispanics and that is racist and violent. So, yes, America is Racist, Violent Country. Tesla. I've owned two and love them.
I've driven Bay area to LA. Needed to charge twice, 20-30 min each time in a six hour drive. Had to stop for lunch or coffee or bathroom break. The Tesla superchargers are quick and calculate the amount of charge needed to next charger (or you can charge more if you choose). My car is non-polluting the air, good for your children/grandchilren; quiet and fiercely quick. Last week, a Jaguar was revving his engine at a red light to try to pass me on my right. I wiped him out with my silent stealth ride. Get one. Have fun. Non-polluting. Riiiiiiight. Keep telling yourself that.
OK, your car is non-polluting the air...
but the coal-powered generating plant that actually powers the car, is polluting the air. and the water. The mining and purifying of the lithium is causing tremendous environmental damage, but at least it's not in your neighborhood. Your car is dragging around 1000 pounds of batteries, causing more wear and tear on the tires, which were produced in a disgusting polluting factory. But at least, not in your neighborhood. I've driven Bay area to LA. Needed to charge twice, 20-30 min each time
That's nice. Now do El Paso to San Antonio. Electric vehicles are actually pretty damned useful for urban driving, in that they keep the emissions out of the most densely populated area. But it is a fool that thinks there is no pollution involved.
I agree. However, the amount of resources, especially rare earth, doesn’t seem to make them very green. We need a better power source for them. The thousand pound batteries are not feasible in the long run. If the Marxists would leave it to a free economy, we will find that source of energy quicker than forced mandates. But that option doesn’t put money in the politicians bank accounts.
flywheels are better than battery storage (in terms of power density per pound):
***** https://www.sae.org/publications/books/content/pt-159/ A kinetic energy recover system (KERS) captures the kinetic energy that results when brakes are applied to a moving vehicle. The recovered energy can be stored in a flywheel or battery and used later, to help boost acceleration. KERS helps transfer what was formerly wasted energy into useful energy. ****** A typical car only needs 20horsepower to overcome air- & rolling- resistance when travelling at a constant speed; they need many times that horsepower for quick acceleration, hence the 300HP engines that have become standard fare. KERS could be used to supply the frequent need for that HP boost; the baseline 20HP (plus a little extra to keep the KERS topped up) could be supplied by much smaller & fuel-efficient internal combustion engine. Lithium batteries have many drawbacks; not just the environmental damage in mining & refining, but also the inherent fire & explosion risk from overcharging. Does anyone see the irony between the way monkey pox is transmitted and celebrating "pride" month?
