Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Organic Agriculture Fails
Shhh…. Don’t tell Samantha Power! Climate scare train...that's more like a steam locomotive. Instead of coal they have been burning tons of dollarsl
California power...put more mini generators on their bicycles and treadmills. Peddle that to the public and it's GREEN. re Is the climate scare train starting to derail?
No. The Climate Scare is a political juggarnaut. There is simply too much money to be skimmed, too much power to be acquire, and too many people who believe it is as real as the sunrise. It's not going away. It is temporarily ignored because there is an election coming up. It will come right back, for the reasons you note.
I have been saying for years now: 1) Slight warming is real. 2) Human actions seem to be a minority part of that. 3) There is no evidence of impending catastrophe. 4) The claims that all the important scientists involved believe that there is an impending catastrophe are bait-and-switch (or motte-and-bailey) diversions pretending that belief in slight warming, which is very common, is evidence deeper problems, which the actual scientists, even those who are deeply supportive of climate change regulation, are much less willing to stake their professional reputations on. Journalists, OTOH, and academics from other fields who think they know something, are the center of the more extreme claims. In 1988, Climate Experts declared that a slowly rising sea level was going to completely cover the Maldives, in the Indian Ocean, by 2018.
In 2020, the Maldive planned to open 4 new airports, and actually opened 5. Last February they opened yet another. QUOTE: Is the climate scare train starting to derail? . . . Go and read the whole thing. From the Nature article, equilibrium climate sensitivity is likely to be 2-4°C per doubling of CO2, and very likely to be 2-5°C. Also, humans are responding to the problem by learning how to reduce their carbon footprint, so likely emissions will decline over the next few decades. Hence, with continued efforts, it is quite possible to limit warming to 2°C by 2100. (1.5°C is probably out of reach.) "Humans are responding..."-like those in China, increasing their carbon footprint at an annual rate 50% greater than the combined efforts of the West to reduce theirs?
DeGaulle: -like those in China, increasing their carbon footprint at an annual rate 50% greater than the combined efforts of the West to reduce theirs?
China has committed to carbon neutrality by 2060. However, they are still industrializing. The trick is to enable continued economic growth, which is required for the innovation required for green technology as well as for providing a share of the economic fruits of development, while making the transition. Assistant Village Idiot: 1) Slight warming is real.
Warming of 2°C will have broad effects on climate, but humans are very adaptable. Much more warming than that will cause severe economic and ecological damage. Assistant Village Idiot: 2) Human actions seem to be a minority part of that. Humans are the primary cause of warming. . See Huber & Knutti, Anthropogenic and natural warming inferred from changes in Earth’s energy balance, Nature Geoscience 2012. Assistant Village Idiot: 3) There is no evidence of impending catastrophe. How warming will move through the climate system is still obscure. However, from Earth's history, it's known that even a few degrees can radically change Earth's climate system. Assistant Village Idiot: 4) The claims that all the important scientists involved believe that there is an impending catastrophe are bait-and-switch (or motte-and-bailey) diversions . . . While, there is a considerable amount of hyperventilation, keep in mind that if humans don't reduce emissions, then warming could exceed 3°C. You ring the fire alarm so the townsfolk will put out the fire. re
I love the excuse for the lack of electrical supply: Officials said traditional electricity demand forecasting does not account for such extreme events prompted by a changing climate. So the shortage of electricity is a result of the Earth being hotter than expected. It has nothing to do with closing fossil fuel and nuclear plants left and right. But wait! You mean to say they've been harping on doom and gloom for decades and done nothing to prepare for this? Let us your ears of dire predictions and show us how they are incorrect, then! And explain to us: What the hell have you been doing with all your climate study mega budgets? You mean to say you've done nothing to put things in place for the things you've predicted? And yet you have no problem forking over billions for a nonexistent high-speed rail project, or hundreds of millions to support homeless, indigent drug users that crap on the streets where they live? What does a power plant cost?
Yeah.
Exactly right. It's a lame excuse at best. They need to come up with something more believable while still being just as disingenuous. Andrew Sullivan is completely off the mark on the abortion issue, besides the fact that as a gay man, he can't relate. He will never have a stake in the game. He's not going to get pregnant and he's not going to get anyone pregnant. Is he entitled to an opinion? I guess anyone is, but will that opinion be grounded in reality? Apparently not.
Re "Males giving birth": And the women thought they had it bad! Pushing a baby out of your wing-wang is worse than getting it caught in your zipper.
