Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

QUOTE: Think You Know What A Woman Is? USA Today Says 'Science' Should Make You Think Again . . . The answer has been obvious to all human beings since the dawn of time Except that's not quite correct. The ancient Jews even had a word for people who are intersex, “androgynos”. and the rabbinic literature delves into the legal questions concerning people who are intersex. The ancient Greeks posited a continuum. Pliny the Elder of Rome said, “there are even those who are born of both sexes”. Biologically, with regard to physical sex, someone who is genetically XY, but has androgen insensitivity, for instance, can have some physical traits of a woman, including female genitalia. In any case, male and female doesn’t just refer to biological sex, but to gender. The human species is highly diverse in gender expression, and social expectations have changed over history. People who don't express typical gender have been subject to persecution for centuries. You missed the point by a million miles. No one has ever doubted that there are confused people, let's call them mentally insane to be more accurate, who don't know what their own gender is. But it is stupid, worse than stupid, to try to convince the 97% who are sane that these insane people who think they are women or giraffes or whatever are right and the 97% are wrong. Yes, some of the 97% are weak or not that intelligent and can be bullied into calling them they, their, whatever, but the rest of know that you are bonkers and perhaps shouldn't be wondering the streets without someone to watch over you. The bottom line is there are men and women and a small number of men or women who have serious mental health issues and to reinforce their fantasy is neither good for them or good for normal people.
JustMe: No one has ever doubted that there are confused people
Androgen insensitivity is not "confusion," but a biological phenomenon. People vary considerably in their homonal balances, which has especial importance during fetal development. "People vary considerably in their homonal balances"
Yeah! Like I said mentally ill. JustMe: Like I said mentally ill.
That people vary in their hormonal balances does not make them mentally ill. Rather, it means that people exhibit a wide range of phenotypes and behavior.

That is exactly an example of mental illness.
You know nothing about science, so once again, shut up. DrTorch: That is exactly an example of mental illness.
A woman who has a naturally high level of testosterone, for example, does not mean she is mentally ill. A man who has a naturally low level of testosterone, for example, does not mean he is mentally ill. However, being ostracized or repeatedly assaulted for being gender non-conforming can lead to emotional difficulties, bad for the victim and bad for the bully.

Androgynos is Greek, not Hebrew, nothing to do with Jews. Now it is true that the ancient Greeks were notorious for pederasty but it was controversial even in those days. In the Hebrew Bible, Sodom and Gomorra got burned to the ground for that sort of immortality. Nice try but your usual off target comment.
Paul in Boston: Androgynos is Greek, not Hebrew, nothing to do with Jews.
The word is of Greek origin, but androgynos אַנְדְּרוֹגִינוֹס is discussed in the rabbic literature, such as in the Mishnah. https://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/1508-androgynos-hermaphrodite https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Androgynos To interject the subject of hermaphrodites into the recent question of defining a woman is intellectually dishonest. Nobody is talking about people with ambiguous genitalia or biology, least of all people like Rebecca Jordan-Young, mentioned in the USA Today article as a "gender studies scholar" (whatever that is). The question is obviously directed at the assertion that people can identify as a gender that they are clearly not such as Lia Thomas.
mudbug: To interject the subject of hermaphrodites into the recent question of defining a woman is intellectually dishonest.
The claim we addressed was "The answer {to 'What is a woman?'} has been obvious to all human beings since the dawn of time." But that isn't quite correct. Sexual ambiguities have been known even in ancient times, including ambiguities in sexual development and ambiguities in gender expression. As for sports, the problem is that sports are divided into a distinct sexual dichotomy when, as it turns out, people do not always divide into a distinct sexual dichotomy. The UPenn swimmer fits into the dichotomy, just not the one they competed in this past season. No hormone level changes that fact.
It is completely correct. You are so pathetic at your efforts to manipulate the language.
Ambiguities only exist with definitions and distinctions are clear. If you understood the words you used, you'd know why your wrong all the time. And that's even when we don't point out you cherry picking your (((historical references))). DrTorch: Ambiguities only exist with definitions and distinctions are clear.
Notably, your sentence regarding the use of language doesn't parse. DrTorch: And that's even when we don't point out you cherry picking your (((historical references))). Your use of triple parentheses is an anti-Semitic trope.

Inserted comma between independent clauses:
DrTorch: DrTorch: Ambiguities only exist with definitions{,} and distinctions are clear. If this is your intended meaning, then distinctions are not always clear. About one in a thousand births result in ambiguous genitalia. Even genetics doesn't always result in a clear dichotomy: People with XX chromosomes can have male traits, and people with XY chromosomes can have female traits.

Wait for it. Quibble-DickZ are trying to make a point only they can make.
Zach, just wondering, does the DNC pay you for all these talking point press releases, or do you do them for free?
Oh! Oh! I can answer that!
"Our opinions our are own, and freely given." Now ask Zack who 'we' are? Putin has no exit that is not a disgrace for him. Cue the Fraiser outro music:
Hey baby, I hear the blues a-callin', Tossed salad and scrambled eggs Oh My Quite stylish. And maybe I seem a bit confused, Yeah maybe, but I got you pegged! Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha! But I don't know what to do with those tossed salads and scrambled eggs. They're callin' again. Scambled eggs all over my face. What is a boy to do? The mayor of NYC exempted celebrity athletes from vaccine requirements while literally at the same time refusing to rehire city workers fired for not getting vaxxed. This makes perfect sense if you understand that they were wrong to mandate the vax but backing down now would clearly show that they were wrong so to cover the lying ass they continue to punish the innocent. Still think we aren't slouching towards tyranny?
Slouching? The speed of sound is in the rear view mirror.
The end of the movies
Why not TV has once again lived up to it's name of the vast wasteland. I channel surf every night each hour to find something worth watching. Three channels have ghost or space alien stories every evening. Does anyone really believe in ghosts? Then one of the alphabet channels has Family Feud hour after hour. Jeezz! There are a handful of shows that could be good but watch them once and your race or gender is insulted, it's like CRT on TV. Most everything else is reruns. I see references to what were some of the better shows now being available by streaming. I suppose I could figure out how to "stream" if I needed to. I guess it's on the internet. But they charge extra. So I have to pay for cable, pay to have internet and now I have to pay to see the TV shows that I used to get on the cable I was paying for. Naw! I'm not going to do it. I won't watch any sports channels because of the racism and anti-Americanism. All of the reality shows are phony scripted crap. So... yeah, let the movies go to hell to for all I care. I don't drink coffee; never have, not in 20 years in the AF. Not gonna start.

https://mishtalk.com/economics/biden-reverses-campaign-pledge-opens-door-for-nuclear-strike-as-a-deterrent Re "Trans Women Are Men": The article states the obvious truth. Why so many people play along with this nonsense (e.g. referring to William "Lia" Thomas as "she") is a mystery to me. OK, maybe a few tenderhearted souls don't want to hurt somebody's widdle feelings, but why is there so little pushback against the Left defining the terms of discourse in this country?
They are unhinged, and if you think this is the end of the doublethink they want to impose on us you are naive indeed. I refuse to participate in this madness in my own speech and writing. If you have a problem with that, sue me. Excellent article by Niall Ferguson
