Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re "Resentments": This seems like a rather oblique take on the situation, in my opinion. Who exactly will be rejecting these credentialed yet downwardly mobile graduates? The corporate and media leaders who enthusiastically embrace PC virtue signaling and the expression of "luxury beliefs"? Of course, it's not hard to understand why these graduates, with their exaggerated sense of self-worth, would be resentful. They were sold (at fancy prices) a crock.
It seems to me that the reason why so many of today's credentialed youth are downwardly mobile is simply because they do not know how to do anything useful, and are not in the habit of working hard at much of anything. That outcome seems entirely appropriate to me. When I was a hiring manager in the engineering world, one visible tattoo or "piercing" would have been enough to convince me that this person was too mentally ill to be on my team. As it happened (through the early 2000's) no such candidates presented themselves. At that time, at least, the demands of the engineering or computer science curricula were enough weed out most of the crazy or useless. "the Best Outcome in Ukraine Now May be may be a relatively quick Russian victory"
Who knew! Neville Chamberlin is alive and well and writing essays on Ukraine. Russia won't simply go back home if Ukraine gives up. First they will purge anyone who took up arms then they will punish every other Ukrainian for years. But more importantly they will then use Ukraine as a stepping stone to other former Soviet satellite countries. The Best Outcome in Ukraine Now May be that Ukraine continue the fight and that the West continues to send then weapons and ammunition. Make this aggression so expensive to Russia that they retreat. Wake up Europe! Russia has you in their sights. the Best Outcome in Ukraine Now May be a Relatively Quick Russian Victory
Always was. Current Ukraine gov't is corrupt and dangerous. Those Bio-labs are just new evidence of this. The attacks on Donbas citizens got no attention for years, but show how bent on death and genocide the Ukraine leadership was. Putain is doing the work Americans won't do. He's taking care of Russia, and benefiting everyone else at the same time. re Monty Python Star John Cleese Is the Latest to Be Silenced
Once upon a time, snatching a microphone from a speaker would have ben considered rude and bad behavior. Once upon a time . . . NYC restaurants are dying not because of COVID insanity, but because they've chosen to accept it as normal. If you won't fight for your own survival, then you don't necessarily survive. If it becomes a societal norm, then your enemies will no longer take you seriously, as a country. See also: Ukraine invasion.
NYC restaurants, Seattle amazon, San Francisco everything, ditto Southern California. The problem isn't covid so much as it is your politicians. If you get that fatal majority of far left, liberal, ignorant voters in a community or state you then get anti-business, anti-law/police, anti-common sense and pro-stupid results.
Every election the left puts out lies, disguises their real agenda, gives away free stuff and somehow in spite of common sense is elected back into power. The best example of this is how quickly the lockdowns and mandates disappeared as elections come closer and the people get angry. BUT as sure as the sun comes up when you elect Democrats they will suddenly find reasons why the science NOW says YOU must suffer. Do you really think that masks mandates won't come back after the election. Even though study after study shows the masks are ineffective and even dangerous to your health. Why then would they mandate masks again??? Because it is a physical representation of their dominance over you and a highly successful way to divide us all. Keep voting in stupid and keep getting stupid results. Broken Record time. Restaurants are always vulnerable. The moment people freely decided of their own accord, without anyone mandating anything or even offering guidelines, that they were going to curtail a lot of going into close quarters at indoor spaces, a lot more restaurants were going to go under. Bars were going to be especially hard hit. While it would be interesting to discuss how much additional pressure guidelines and mandates put on the industry, we apparently are never going to be able to have that discussion, because too many articles start with the assumption that it was all because of "covid insanity," and government response or people panicking.
The disease was the problem. Tot up the cost of that first. Everyone who does not start there loses me very quickly. Come back when the possibility of objectivity occurs to you. As long as people cannot differentiate between obvious things, no one is going to take them seriously. Then they will complain that no one is listening and others don't care and are just telling them what to do for no reason. And you will get lots of pats on the back from people telling you how right you are, and how brave. At this point it is apparent that none of the mandates worked and we are today roughly where we would be if we had chosen to do nothing. For that reason I think that those people whose life was destroyed by incorrect and even incredibly stupid mandates should have the right or ability to sue in court and get their life/wealth back. Now of course I know that won't be allowed but because we haven't created an avenue for those who were harmed to be made whole there will be lingering anger and quite possibly angry actions by those most harmed.
This isn't over. A lot of data, records and conversations is intentionally being hidden from the people by those in our government. I think actions our government took directly resulted in the death of tens of thousands of people. Some of these actions were just incompetence but some was clearly political or a misuse of power. Make no mistake there will be court actions to release that data and some of it will not go over well when it is exposed. Can we talk about covid insanity in the second paragraph? How sane was it to say, bars and restaurants must close, however, keep the liquor stores, and pot shops open? Big box stores okay. No churches can be open. One year later: restaurants can open at half capacity, but you must wear a mask while walking to your table. Then and only then can you take the mask off; we would really prefer you to put it back on between bites. Oh, and anything resembling a mask is okay; even a cotton bandanna. The list of double standards and insanity needs to be discussed. I really do wish you would put your high horse out to pasture.
@ Just Me - it is not remotely apparent. Saying it repeatedly doesn't make it so. Explain how different states have such different outcomes if those things have no effect.
@ B Hammer - I said nothing here about the hypocrisy and inconsistencies. Those are indeed legitimate topics for discussion. But they are minor. The hypocrisy is mostly annoying, not dangerous. It lets you know who to watch closely and go looking for opponents in the primary. I have mentioned previously that masks have some effect when they are good masks worn properly and by a large percentage of the population. I don't like fake masking either. Liquor stores sell a product you can't easily and quickly make at home, and a percentage of people cut off from ETOH will get DT's and die, so that kept them open. It is ironic, but it's not crazy. I'm not sure why you say the double standards need to be discussed, as if they weren't a daily news item, even though they are not the main drivers of either safety or keeping businesses open. They are discussed all the time. What I seldom see discussed, because it is largely overlooked and forgotten, is that many people are angry at their government and their fellow citizens who created the smaller portion of the economic damage while ignoring the effects of the disease, which would still be considerable on businesses, supply chains, and medical facilities even if the government had done zip. It's big and we don't talk about it. I don't get why people prefer to talk about how furious they are at symbolic things rather than address the actual issues in hopes of figuring out what would be better next time. "what would be better next time."
First, don't step away from the constitution. We are free people. If the government believes we are serfs then game on. Second, take care of the most vulnerable. Instead of spending billions destroying businesses and paying off cronies, spend the money and effort building up the health care system so that we can treat all the patients with everyday illnesses AND treat the covid patients. Third, as leaders be responsible. Give us good information. Hold nothing back and don't exploit us simply because you can get away with it. Tell us what our options are and give us your best advice and then allow us to make our own health decision in concert with our doctors. Our government pretty much did everything wrong. Contradicted themselves over and over again simply saying whatever would be in their best interests at the time. People like Gov Cuomo should be in jail for manslaughter. I want to see an investigation and some of our politicians frog marched in cuffs off to prison. 7 Monopoly hacks to ensure that you win every time
