We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I have read every one of Smith's #1 Ladies Detective Agency books, and it was time well spent. They are, truly, beautiful. Dalrymple was, as he so often is, spot-on. Another, sadly all too short, series was the Corduroy Mansions series. And, as a former academic, the gentle, wonderful series under the title of Portuguese Irregular Verbs is a pure delight.
The problem with this abrupt shift from workplace to home office is the same an many problems with the COVID pandemic: We haven't had an opportunity to fully evaluate the consequences yet. I think they are already being felt and I predict they will ultimately be mostly rolled back. The problem is the diminishing quality of work product because of lack of direct supervision and lack or direct interaction with colleagues. These are fundamental to business success. I am already seeing quality of delivered services deteriorating, rather dramatically. Companies have initially tried to make things right by simply replacing or refunding - but this model decimates the bottom line and can't continue indefinitely.
Human nature still rules. The same drivers of self-interest that precipitate opportunistic crime are at play with people who are working unsupervised. It's a great idea if humans were perfectly responsible and mature about it, but......out of all the people you know, what percentage fit this description?
Working remotely is definitely a "horses for courses" thing. I despise food delivered from some eatery, and I've certainly noticed that far too many business have use "the COVID" as a bullshxt excuse to reduce the scope and quality of their goods and services.
On the other hand, I found some great benefits from converting my college courses from face-to-face lectures to online delivery. Right now I'm settling in to "hybrid" delivery, online with one weekly lecture. Seems to work well for my tiny niche in the economy, but it's not something I'd evangelize.
Biden's energy department pick says all you need to know, if you didn't know it already, about what kind of filth (all of them, not just this piece of human waste) is in the driver's seat of this country. Moscow and Beijing are in 7th Heaven.
