Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I have only one firm belief about the American political system, and that is this: God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat.
God is an elderly or, at any rate, middle aged male, a stern fellow, patriarchal rather than paternal and a great believer in rules and regulations. He holds men accountable for their actions. He has little apparent concern for the material well being of the disadvantaged. He is politically connected, socially powerful and holds the mortgage on literally everything in the world. God is difficult. God is unsentimental. It is very hard to get into God's heavenly country club. Santa Claus is another matter. He's cute. He's nonthreatening. He's always cheerful. And he loves animals. He may know who's been naughty and who's been nice, but he never does anything about it. He gives everyone everything they want without the thought of quid pro quo. He works hard for charities, and he's famously generous to the poor. Santa Claus is preferable to God in every way but one: There is no such thing as Santa Claus. P J O'Rourke Was that story about the far right mothers supposed to be a joke? The spy seemed incensed that these mothers were actually looking out for their children's best interest rather than being obedient slaves to the state. Surely it was a joke. Surely the left and the right can't actually be that far apart on this.
It's a little hard not to read that HuffPo piece and detect that, underneath all that horror, there's a little spark of righteous hate being kindled and nurtured, and the prospect of that is bringing, in its turn, a little thrill.
I will have NOTHING to do with the NYT...except to scorn it.
I Joined A Far-Right Group Of Moms. What I Witnessed Was Frightening. "I caught a gleam in the woman’s eye I didn’t like. Was there some flirtation with insurrection being suggested here?" And they didn't shoot you?????? What the 1619 Project Got Wrong: Pretty much everything... Much as I hated to, I clicked on the link to the HuffPo harangue and I couldn't help but notice that while the headline refers to a "far-right" group of moms ("far-right" meaning "not left-wing") but the url says "far-right extremist moms". Was the headline stealth edited or was the "extremist" simply implied?
But when this woman claims to be following the science in insisting school children should be masked because of the ICU's and the morgues overflowing with the sick and the dead, well, she seems to be unaware that it's not the children filling the hospitals and the cemeteries. She also claims that CRT is not being taught in the schools when the essence of CRT is that racism is a necessary and sufficient explanation for all of American history, just as the 1619 Project posits and which is being offered as a school curriculum guide. And which she herself seems to admit with her comment that history should include both the good and "especially" the bad - what's with that "especially"? And when she claims that these right-wing moms object to subjects such as slavery, Jim Crow laws, and MLK being taught in the schools? Yeah, I'm skeptical that that's what they're objecting to. It's that that's all that's being taught, that America is uniquely evil and racist - everything is racist, from math and science and learning to read and write to fly fishing, camping, and horseback riding - and must be destroyed completely in order for our new socialist paradise to arise from the ashes. As a child of the '60s and '70s, I can remember Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee being an assigned text in history class and the most-watched TV mini-series being Roots, which I would suggest indicates the "warts and all" approach to history is hardly an unknown concept. What has changed is the idea that it's all warts. But when she accuses the Right of twisting the meaning of such terms as "Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity" so as to politically subvert the plain meaning of those words, she's gone from being ignorant to being a liar. It's not the Right controlling the dictionary so as redefine the meaning of peace and freedom and strength. But it's always been projection with these people. I believe that a great issue with the telling of the history of the North American Indian, is that the perspective often starts with the worst atrocities committed by Americans beginning after the Civil War. Of course the tragedy of the Trail of Tears is highlighted, that being the forced relocation of the Five Civilized Tribes. However, the history of the antagonism began much earlier than 1830. One needs to go all the way back to the early 1600’s to understand the reasons for the depravity. However, not many want to treat the early European settlers with feelings other than evil intentions. A more honest reading of those times, tells a story of torture, murder and savagery, committed by all races.
Any newspaper's lineup of puzzle games that doesn't include Jumble is second rate. I started playing Jumble in '54 when it showed up in the Columbus OH Dispatch while I was a grad student at Ohiio State, played it throughout a career as a USAF pilot, played it throughout a second career after military retirement, and still play it today, albeit on the Seattle Times web site. (I live about as far from Seattle as you can get in the U.S, but their Jumble is the least troublesome offering I have found.)
As anyone else noticed that "insurrection" seems to be the left's newest favorite buzzword? Phoebe Cohen obviously wrote the outlines of her article before she ever attended a group of "far-right mom's" meeting. I guess "racism" has become too worn out.
As per normal, the left accuses their enemies, of the exact things that they are doing. Individual liberty, to the left, is like the crucifix to Dracula, they cannot coexist together in the same zip code.
Yesterday on the news they had two "do-gooders" on the news bragging about how they are helping the homeless. The story is that the state of California was building "affordable housing" for the homeless and it cost $550,000 per unit. But they were able to build "affordable housing" from used shipping containers for a mere $175,000! WTF are thy just too stupid to be allowed to walk around without supervision? I live in what is called a "park model" trailer. Mine is older and I bought it for $12,000. Am I wrong to think that $12,000 is a whole hell of a lot closer to "affordable" than either $550K or $175K is?
The current panic on the national news is the lack of covid tests especially home testing kits. What is the value of a home or randomly admitted test for covid? It make sense to test someone who is actually sick so you would know how to treat the illness. But it doesn't make sense to randomly test people who are not sick or to allow/encourage healthy but worried people to test themselves. To what end? Especially since the tests are not accurate and often simply wrong.
I'll never understand the testing craze. We haven't been tested even once during the entire pandemic. Why would we?
During the interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” host Margaret Brennan asked Kamala about the one national security threat that keeps her up at night worrying.
“Frankly, one of them is our democracy. There is, I think, no question in the minds of people who are foreign policy experts that the year 2021 is not the year 2000,” she said. “And we are embarking on a new era where the threats to our nation take many forms. Including the threat of autocracies taking over and having outsized influence around the world.” She really said that. I don't read the NYTimes anymore, it's so tedious it's ridiculous. I do enjoy the NYTimes Mini Crossword Puzzle occasionally, but lately it's too easy.
I've always found the Sunday crossword to be excellent intellectual stimulation in an otherwise devoid media
The NY Times hasn't given up on the non-college, I suppose
QUOTE: “Why you fool, it’s the educated reader who CAN be gulled. All our difficulty comes with the others. When did you meet a workman who believes the papers? He takes it for granted that they’re all propaganda and skips the leading articles. He buys his paper for the football results and the little paragraphs about girls falling out of windows and corpses found in Mayfair flats. He is our problem. We have to recondition him. But the educated public, the people who read the high-brow weeklies, don’t need reconditioning. They’re all right already. They’ll believe anything.” — C.S. Whittaker Whittaker Chambers, better known for being a Communist spy and for his autobiography Witness- and for his connection with Alger Hiss- was the translator for the first English language edition of Bambi. |
