Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

We learned, long ago

Desserts in Italy are not worth it. If you need a sweet, grab a gelato on the street. Or a lemon ice, which the Italians learned from the Arabs who, remarkably, imported the snow and ice from the Alps.


Tiramisu seems to be a popular Italian dessert. I think it's ok, but I rarely eat dessert anywhere.  I had one gelato (coffee) in Italy, and it was disappointing.


The guy who invented Tiramisu in the 1970s has died.

I've had Tiramisu once.

A cannoli is not a dessert. It's a street snack.

Italians have fruit for dessert.

Fruit is good. Wadda they got? Watermelons? Pineapples? Mangoes? Coconuts? Ruby red grapefruit?

Italians have little need of desserts given the richness and diversity of their cuisine.

I remember when we lived in SFO. The most wonderful "new place" had just opened. It had been talked about for weeks in advance, news coverage, etc. it was a "true Italian pastry"shop. Three different times I went in and purchased something that looked wonderful. When I asked about the ingredients it sounded wonderful. Three different times I had my heart broken--that's when I learned that Italian dessert is for some reason not very satisfying! I love the gelato. Thanks for affirming my own assessment.
