We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I don't care anymore. They stole the election and our future. They are importing a new electorate and want us dead via massive amounts of American heroin and Chinese Fentanyl and the erasure of our culture. 85% of the troop deaths are white guys who are now being demonized by the elites. How many troops are committing suicide each month?
I don't care anymore. I tell everyone in my family not to join the military. We live in an occupied country. We have wanted less legal immigration and zero illegal immigration for decades and gotten the opposite. What happened to democracy? Unless they bring back the draft it is over. WE are told immigrants built this country, they better get ready to fight for it. Some of us are sitting the next few wars out.
We have a ruling class that has lost touch with reality and is busy remaking America and Western Europe to conform with their fantasies. Furthermore, we have an electorate that is very different from the one of even 20 years ago. Much of it is good with the ruling elite's agenda.
The Afghan humiliation was NOT a wake up call for them. My crystal ball says things will get much worse.
We can see the coming train wreck but we are too small and insignificant to stop it.
You lost me at Bret Stephens, no need to waste any more time. And I'm just getting up this morning. Read Mark Steyn if you want better analysis. And most of his stuff is free because his idea is that you can't persuade people behind a paywall.
Stephens has things exactly backwards. There has been no Pax Americana; there has been a Bellum Americana. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the US military has been on a rampage throughout the world. The great majority of armed conflicts over the last 30 years has been instigated by the US. Moreover, almost always we have attacked countries that did not attack us or our allies:
Couldn't have happened without the massive voter fraud to steal the election. The blame lays on Republicans who didn't support Trump and their party and the Supremes who didn't support the constitution.
1. No paywall for me.
2. He's a sharp guy and a good writer, and he almost gets the answer right. He touches it, but then moves on.
(Old-guy rant): For the past twenty years, we've no longer taught our kids history. They have no context for why the US did some things that, superficially, now seem wrong. They have no idea what we were fighting, what facts dragged us into wars, why some people now seem downtrodden - in short, how we got here.
In a mind without history, people who were truly the bad guys and lost and are now not on top are easily made into victims, and they have become so.
This uneducated cohort is now moving into control. Stephens is arguing - look at history! We need to be doing these things! - but there's no history to be examined anymore. No one knows any of it anymore.
My generation's partial fault for not insisting on proper education of following generations, sure. But the rank intellectual vacuousness of those generations not insisting on learning history and simply accepting what corrupt power-hungry progressive demagogues want to tell them? All on them.
Without this sense of history - without knowledge of where evil truly lies - America cannot be the world cop, even if to do so would be to our advantage. Without history, there's no justification for it. And so it will go away, bad folk will more easily come into power across the world, and the ignorant American polity will wonder where it all went wrong.
