Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Bumper crop of peaches right now

The weight of all the fruit has broken many limbs, so it's the last year for this old tree. Such fruit trees have a limited life span. 


It has produced abundantly every three years. Feast or famine. My pic does not capture the amount of fruit.


Invited a gardening pal over to share the harvest.


I think the wood might be nice for smoking a turkey on Thanksgiving.

It's hard to see a fruit tree go. I hope you have other younger ones? We can't grow stone fruit here, too warm, but peaches are a delight of life.

If you have small relatives, a dollhouse-sized magic Wardrobe from the wood would be nice.

I wondered immediately what the origin of "bumper" crop is. Looking it up, I find that it first meant a cup or glass of wine filled to the brim or even spilling over, then came to mean anything unusually large.

A friend of mine uses peach, pecan and oak wood to smoke his bbq pork and ribs.

Looks like that peach tree could have used a prune.

Well that's the thing. Peaches only produce on last year's growth. So if you prune heavily, you get no fruit next year. It really doesn't matter to me because the squirrels eat all my peaches anyway.

If you see you're bearing a lot of fruit after the blooming cycle, you selectively remove them before they mature, thus avoiding the over-load.

I live near large groves of peach trees in the central valley of northern California. The limited life span of those trees has led to businesses that specialize in clearing no-longer-productive orchards.

Here in Georgia we grow more pecans and peanuts than peaches.

I'm SO happy they call us the Peach State.

Neighbor's peach and pear trees are getting mauled by the black bears. Even if the branches can hold the exceptional production, they can't handle the weight of the bears!
