We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
General Keane has also defended the Afghan Military against Biden's smears.
The Northern Alliance is supposedly regrouping in the Panjshir Valley along with remnants of the Afghan Army.
Oh and per Nigel Farage. Afghanistan is sitting atop some of the largest reserves of Lithium in the world. You have heard of Lithium, right? Crucial to battery technology and the Green New Deal. China wins.
If I remember correctly, Bush was supposed to have tasked Condi with clearing out the dead wood and commies at State but it seems she never really made a dent in it. If she had somehow succeeded State would have been just a shell in Foggy Bottom.
During many years helping people travel from one place to another, I finally accepted the fact that our diplomatic service is predominantly useless. Our US embassies are only workable if you manage to get inside the fence that just closed behind you. If you just want to ask for help with paper work, information, or Heaven Forbid any kind of service at all--you will probably be better off begging for help in the local newspaper office! Service on behalf of "the other" is just not in their genetic makeup. The primary requirement for service in this agency is the fact that you were raised by a wealthy family and have assumed your birth right to have anything you want, i.e. a job in the diplomatic corps.
Disagree entirely, that article was nonsense. Especially the emerging consensus that we need to evacuate every Afghan that "helped us" during our time there.
For anyone who didn't deploy to Afghanistan, good terps and other Afghans were helped with their special immigrant visas. Americans have to vouch for your SIV, and we weren't inclined to vouch for an Afghan unless they were solid.
A lot of them were NOT good people, not people you'd want to live here as your neighbor. A blanket resettlement is a terrible idea.
Second, the Afghans DID choose the Taliban. They have supported them for 20 years. The best and brightest in Afghanistan join the Taliban, not the government. Only a minority of Afghans wanted to live in a modern society where girls go to school (IMO).
Rice, like all our Masters, is delusional. Enough Afghans did choose the Taliban to give them the victory. The original Taliban were the Pashtun militia (armed and trained by the US), representing some 40% of the population, but today the Taliban are a coalition of tribes, and the coalition likely is a substantial majority of the Afghans.
The real scandal is not that we lost, but that in losing we bugged out, abandoning not only our Afghan allies, but also our Canadian, British, German, Dutch, and other allies. A more shameful act of cowardice and disloyalty cannot be found anywhere else in our history.
