Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Kamala Harris's mother was a biomedical scientist from India. In Sanskrit, Kamala means lotus, a plant that has its roots in the riverbed, but whose flower rises to bloom on the water's surface. The lotus is taken to represent enlightenment and rebirth, and how something beautiful can arise from the mud.
I know, it's just a play on words.
When I saw that on another forum I looked for it in other languages as well. Didn't find any. Language is very complicated. My name is "Monty". Most people think it's a nickname for Montgomery or Montague but it's not. "Monty" was the nickname of the doctor who delivered me. In Calgary, mention of Kamala brings this to mind:

QUOTE: ‘That’s Bullsh*t’: Vietnam Vet Star Wars Shop Owner Tells Trans Council Member ‘You’re Not A Woman’ In Viral Public Confrontation Han Solo: "Uh, Lord Jiliac, are you feeling—" Jabba Desilijic Tiure: "Human idiot! Can't you see that Lord Jiliac is now Lady Jiliac? She is expecting! In her delicate condition, she really should not make this effort, but we Desilijic are nothing if not faithful to our duty!" Han Solo: "Your pardon, Lady Jiliac. I am not familiar with your species' … uh, er … reproductive habits. I meant no offense." Jiliac Desilijic Tiron: "No offense taken. My people reproduce as they will, and I decided it was time for me to do so." ―Han Solo, Jabba Desilijic Tiure, and Jabba's aunt Jiliac Desilijic Tiron discuss her shift in gender Christopher B: 'Trans' is fiction. Good to know.
Actually, human sexuality and gender are not strictly binary. For instance, about 1 in 2000 births exhibit ambiguous sex organs, while androgen insensitivity occurs in about 1 in 10000 births. That means that even in a small town, such as Dodge City, Kansas, or Plainfield, Indiana, there will likely be a number of people who are non-binary by birth. That's without even considering the wide range of sexual identities and behaviors found among the human species. Regardless, as an aficionado of Star Wars, the shop owner would hopefully be more open to diversity. Then again, the franchise has had troubles diversity since its inception, especially when compared to Star Trek, which had diversity built into its very foundations. Oh, 1 in 2000?
Obviously we must craft our society to put the edge cases first in all things, and let those guide how we can have a ... Pretty much screwed up general society. Law based on edge cases, (An edge case is a problem or situation that occurs only at an extreme (maximum or minimum) operating parameter.) almost always makes for bad results going forward. Manipulating society so that the edge case is seen as a norm which must have preference in all accommodations is pretty much guaranteed to cause anger and resentment when others are disadvantaged. JLawson: Obviously we must craft our society to put the edge cases first in all things, and let those guide how we can have a ...
What it means is that trans people exist regardless of your views or the views of the shop owner. As the transgender council member said, “We are people. We are who we are and we all want to be accepted in our community.”

They exist. I do not argue they don't.
I argue that they do not have a right to control.

JLawson: I argue that they do not have a right to control.
Huh? The shop owner had a sign that transgenders would find offensive. A transgender council person voiced her objection. There's nothing there about coercion. But sure. People have the right to express their opinion, just as others have the right to criticize that expression.

That nature doesn't always get everything right or that specific components of the incredibly complex biological machinery that we call the human body exhibit a wide range of possible values is indisputable.
Also indisputable is that liberals like to spew word salad when called on conflation of biology, sexual preference, sexual expression, and gender. Christopher B: That nature doesn't always get everything right or that specific components of the incredibly complex biological machinery that we call the human body exhibit a wide range of possible values is indisputable.
Turns out, they're people too. Christopher B: Also indisputable is that liberals like to spew word salad when called on conflation of biology, sexual preference, sexual expression, and gender. You might try to be specific. Who said what?

QUOTE: Did the CDC Director just kill the rationale for vaccine passports? . . . If a vaccinated and non-vaccinated person have the same capacity to carry, shed and transmit the virus Except that people who are vaccinated are less likely to become infected, and if infected, less likely to transmit the virus. However, the vaccine is not perfect. That means some people who are vaccinated will become infected, so where the virus is prevalent, people should still take precautions. It helps the individual, and it helps the community. QUOTE: Kiddiez: Except that people who are vaccinated are less likely to become infected, (of which you have no proof) and if infected, less likely to transmit the virus (of which you have no proof). Apparently not in Israel, Kiddiez. https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-seeing-new-covid-19-outbreak-despite-vaccine-success-2021-6?op=1 Funny that the transgender council member refers to herself as a "trans-woman" rather than as simply a woman. And the plaintive whine "all we want is to be accepted", well, sorry bubbette, you may be entitled to toleration, you're not entitled to acceptance. There's a difference between "I may not agree with what you say but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" and "You must agree with me or else." You're not the victim here when you're demanding that contrary opinions be silenced - you're the oppressor.

She specifically said the shop owner has the right to his opinion, just as she has a right to criticize that opinion. Shouldn't Black English be called Blacklish?

It probably won't be a surprise, but though I've worked at UW Madison for decades I've not heard a whisper of any such name applied to Chamberlin Rock--and trust me, the campus newspapers would have been all over the story if anybody had used the phrase.
Prospective pain by proxy... "Somebody may have meant a slur, that may have hurt somebody else, and so I'll be hurt on their behalf and demand that something be done."
