We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
From a pal who is spending this summer in the Sierras. Rufous and Anna's Hummingbirds. He says they go through 10 lbs. of sugar attracting the Hummers.
We have the Ruby-Throated here in WNC, but only a couple this years. In previous years we've had up to ten so I don't know what gives. Probably Global Warming, Coronavirus, or Racism /sarc
We live in Missouri and don't have as many as usual and neither do others I know that feed the hummers. Our hummingbirds refuse t share a feeder with other when eating. We just get the dive bomb fighting here.
Occasionally two will come to opposite sides of the feeder at the same time, but they don't see each other. Then one will fly up a little to check if there's another one there, and if it doesn't see one, resume feeding. Then the other will take a peek. I've seen this synchronous behavior persist for almost a minute. Eventually, they both fly up at the same moment and a fight ensues. Very entertaining.
In hummer season we can go through 10 lbs in a couple of days, and the local grocery store is hard pressed to keep up with demand. Peak is about 5-6 weeks away.
My wife keeps them hummers in juice. And the birds, chipmunks, and squirrels in seeds and nuts.
New PRIDE flag?" There's and OLD one???

Can The Care And Feeding Of College Students Go Too Far? Raising prices could fix that.
I live in the Antelope Valley, high desert north of Los Angeles. We've always had Anna's at our feeders, with Rufous guys passing through spring and fall. Until this spring a Rufous family planted roots. They seem to be a bit more territorial, guarding the back yard feeder. On a side note, we had Robins take up residence as well, which was unusual, as we also only saw them in spring or fall previously. I know they are numerous, but we didn't see them in our neighborhood a lot.
