We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Our athletics have moved from a culture of devotion to developing ability and prowess, to figuring out how to make it all about oneself. I guess this brilliance started with Kopernickel. Now it's all about leveraging a moment in the limelight to making sure you hog all the limelight. Isn't it interesting how the Olympics are turning out? Substandard performances, contrived dramas, and nobody seems to care. Almost as if the team is representing...someone else, instead of the American public sentiment.
...meant to say also, an athlete that is overseas representing a country at a competitive event is a de-facto ambassador. If you decide to take the opportunity to trash-talk your country, then maybe you shouldn't be on the team anymore, with immediate effect. You can find your things on the sidewalk outside the hotel, and figure out your travel plans yourself. Nobody cares about your issues or your aggrandizement plan.
Agree. I'm proud of my country. I fly the flag, as do many in my neighborhood. I stand, remove my hat, and put my right hand over my heart when the National Anthem is played. I support and honor the military. I support the police. I love sports but I've had it with the me-me-me athletes.
I had the pleasure of seeing k. d. lang in Calgary. I appreciated that she does what we pay her to do. She could easily inject her personal preferences and opinions before a friendly audience, but she shuts up and sings. As far as I recall any advocacy she does, she does when she's not on "fans' time".
