Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

IMO the baseline condition of the general population is bad enough that a supervised 8 week crash course in healthy living will show an improvement in whatever metric you design it for, a bit like how many diets achieve miracle weight loss in the first weeks mainly by shedding water.
The big question is always whether the lifestyle changes and associated health benefits will stick once the close supervision ends. Nevertheless, the amazingly rapid advances in personal health monitoring hardware and associated apps may make health improvement through AI coaching a reality, so anytime we discover a new pathway to sustained health is good news. If you avoid drugs, alcohol and tobacco you can expect a long and healthy life within the limits of your genetic predispositions. The belief that there is magic food or magic exercise is naive.
Dr Fitzgerald's "magic" formula is really quite reasonable. Instead of relying on some magic pill, the diet centers on greens, cruciferous vegetables, clean animal protein, nuts, seeds, eggs, beets, and berries, and the lifestyle practices simply involve moderate exercise, decent sleep, connecting to others, and some sort of relaxation practice.
The primary reasons Americans' life expectancies have risen have less to do with our diet and exercise habits and certainly are not the result of cutting back on drugs, alcohol or tobacco. Many of the founding fathers lived well into their 80s having avoided death from childhood illnesses or infectious diseases in the pre-antibiotic era. Much of the thesis of the article has to do with epigenetics or doing what you can to influence the genetics you were born with. That's the point of the magic diet and lifestyle modifications the authors propose - to take the genes you were born with and turn on the good genes and turn off the bad genes. I know! It sounds so good it must be true, right? But it is all made up. He could just as easily argue that bacon, eggs and ice cream is the perfect diet. There is simply no proof. It is just a bias put down on paper and rationalized. Frankly my diet is high in chocolate and snacks and it works like magic. Four tsp of sugar in my morning coffee to make sure I get my sugar MDR. I'm thinking of writing a book call Anon's diet to live longer and laugh at the other fake diets.
Cultural advancement and specialization has turned us into remarkably ignorant creatures, to the extent that we can no longer make sense of obvious things. For instance, we are exhorted to 'Trust the Science' and yet no scientists have proven that CO2 in the atmosphere is driving Global Warming, indeed, that there is any Global Warming at all - much less correlated with CO2 levels. There is still vigorous debate about these hypotheses, where debate is even allowed.
And yet we are being pushed straight past this glaring scientific omission and being corralled into acceptance of unsustainable energy choices. Unsustainable in the long term, and as we learned this winter across the northern hemisphere, pretty much unsustainable in the short term, too. Every country that has tried the experiment has come up woefully short. It should be obvious that the distribution of energy is best accomplished from sources of high energy density, nuclear being at the top of that pyramid. Solar and Wind and other forms of distributed, low density energy collection are at the bottom; they will never succeed on scale. They require too much land, have too great an environmental impact, and require a collection network to concentrate the energy for distribution to consumers. It doesn't work. They are simply a parasite on the existing grid, dependent on tax credits while making free use of infrastructure that was built for conventional powergen. Contrast the thousands of acres that are required for modest 'Green' energy generation, capacity that is implicitly crippled by intermittency, against the one-time construction activity for a buried pipeline supplying a clean gas-fired plant with near 100% design uptime. This demonstrates the cognitive impairment of the environmental evangelists; it's nothing less than willful ignorance. The principle attraction of solar and wind generation is portability - they're great for your sailboat or your cabin, maybe even for backpacking. Their attraction lies in their portability and independence from infrastructure. At small scale, they offer great value. But at industrial scale, they are a blight on the landscape, and anything but 'green'. About 1850 we ended the mini-ice age, a natural and reoccurring cooling period. It was inevitable that after ending a cooling period that you would be entering a warming period and we did. THIS is ALL the warmies have. This is 100% of the "proof" of global warming. Nothing more! This is what the myth is based on. Global warming is and always has been a scam to extract large sums of money from tax payers to be transferred to politicians and special interests. Those who fall for it are genetically stupid.
Yep.
And yet the genetically stupid are winning the day. It boggles my feeble mind. I saw something recently that indicated that there was a period in the 1930s when temperatures in the U.S. were significantly hotter than now. That's what caused the Dust Bowl and huge droughts in the U.S., and was greater than what is going on now. That seems to have been disappeared from the data sets when people are now claiming unparalleled climate change.
Three years younger in just eight weeks? A new study suggests yes! I'd need 10 or 20.

The food here is terrible: Accounts of Merchant Seamen interned in the Second World War
https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/the-food-here-is-terrible-accounts-of-merchant-seamen-interned-in-the-second-world-war/ Biden train wreck: They don't care. The point is always that they have power in DC, the only country they know. He is a tribesman and that is everything. The best of them are aware that no one will have any power in America in a few decades if we don't act wisely now, but even they no longer seem to wield any influence.
We have one party that is 40% wrong and another that is 90% wrong. That means a political class tha averages 65% wrong. I'm not sure even resounding Republican victories in 2022 and 2024 will change things much. We are increasingly driven to personal, spiritual solutions. Maybe that's not a bad thing. |
