Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

A Mormon walks into a megachurch.
Punchline: And, still, neither of them has any idea what Christianity is. I'm just somewhat kidding. It's a free country, believe in whatever you want. Crossroads sounded like weak sauce to me, please everyone, offend no one, carry water for the godless culture
Jesus is all about what ever makes you feel good. The gospels are replete with Jesus admonishing: Go forth and just do it! Love thyself with all you are; put no one before self. There really is no sin, it’s just the male hierarchy making stuff up. Sow your wild oats; it’s the true lesson of the prodigal son. When those around you are destroying their lives with drugs and alcohol, or sexual perversion that spread disease, don’t judge and berate, give them safe places, clean needles, and easy access to health clinics providing abortions and a plethora of drugs to mask the pain and infection that will lead to their death. It’s all good, you’ll have eternity in heaven.
Nature and Science journals were the most striking: here, non-replicable papers were cited 300 times more often.
Not 50% more often, not 10 times more often but 300 times more often. It's almost as if no value whatsoever is placed on the likely validity of the study's result. When the value of an article is measured by clicks, it seems unsurprising that the most cited studies are those that make the most outrageous claims. Snake oil, by any name, has always been sold by charlatans who promise the unsuspecting impossible results. I guess nothing has changed in this regard. "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton is a dated but entertaining read on this subject. It's all about the funding, baby. There is no blind funding of scientific research, and it inevitably biases scientists to align themselves with the beliefs of the money-givers in order to get the grants. It happens on all sides of every issue. And once the devotion to the Scientific Method is compromised, all the results are, too. Today's experimental results will determine tomorrow's grants success. You want better science, even good science? Start with the structural support of ethical conduct.
How Lockdowns Helped Hide The Plain Evidence That COVID-19 Isn’t A Good Excuse For Panic Boy, there was a lot of truth in that article. At first, I panicked like everybody else - wiping down boxes that UPS delivered and coffee cups at McDonald's, etc.. Then I started looking around and the evidence of my senses just didn't match the 24/7 panic porn spewing from the media. It became obvious that, for most people, COVID wasn't as serious as everyone was making it out to be. In the county where I live, since day one, there have been only 100 hospitalizations and 33 deaths - and half of the deaths were in nursing homes. Actually, we still don't really know whether those deaths were due to COVID, or "with" COVID; Our local authorities aren't saying. As of last week, the supermarkets and other stores have dropped their mask and distancing requirements, yet I still see people walking around town wearing masks. Go figure. I am becoming more convinced that this whole thing was just an attempt to get Trump out of office.
QUOTE: Actually, we still don't really know whether those deaths were due to COVID, or "with" COVID; Our local authorities aren't saying. I hear you. I don't know if the guy I shot last week died "with" a bullet or due to a bullet, and the authorities aren't saying. QUOTE: As of last week, the supermarkets and other stores have dropped their mask and distancing requirements, yet I still see people walking around town wearing masks. Hey genius, some cancer patients under treatment that compromises their immune systems wear masks. So what business is it of yours who wears a mask and why? The authorities aren't saying either, but you could just ask someone if you're that curious. Be prepared for the standard, "fuck you, you virtue signaling prick" response. Can't argue with a 99%+ survival rate, but there's a whole lot of nervous leftie neurotics that would like to.
Covid or its replacement will arrive again. It allowed them to lockdown Trump and Trumpers and to open up voting cheats in order to get the helm. They are becoming Maddow/Scarborough crazy and their M.O. is showing.
I never paid much attention to megachurches before, but this one sounds just like the fictional Church of the New Revelation, ie. the Fosterites, mentioned in Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Stranger Land".
The Morman v Mega piece….physically painful. Finished it like a really hard workout for the painful amusement value alone. Thor is amused.
I think a lot of Robin DiAngelo claim of "white fragility" is directed at the white liberals who keep melting whenever anyone suggests they are racist. With them, she's got a point.
From what I've seen, 'white' has a lot less to do with skin color than it has to do with being able to prosper in a Western Educated Industrialized Rich Democracy.
In some sense the fragility of white liberals that sensitizes them to the disparity is admirable, though their projection of a 'if we made it anybody should be able to' attitude as a failing of conservatives obscures the difficulties of the problem. Citing their ‘feelings,’ university theater students rail against play selection: Ooooooooooooohhhhhh, poor BABIES...
America's Largest Defense Contractor Goes WOKE: The STUPID is STRONG in these ones. ‘White Fragility’ Is a Racist Concept: I am some shade of "white", but I can deal with it. Not "fragile" though. I'm a tough old guy. Heart 4-way cloverleaf bypasses; snapped an achilles tendon, got that sewed up; got most of my teeth. Question for college students: Will you chip in to help Hamas destroy Israel? My guess is that many would. SFUSD teachers’ union endorses Israel boycott movement: It's Frisco; I am NOT surprised. The week in whoppers: The NYT’s anti-science ‘science’ reporter, a despicable cartoon and more: I despise, detest, and TOTALLY distrust the NYT (the WaPoo, too). Gaza Reconstruction? Welcome to La-La Land: Grifters and charlatans will make out. Gazans won't. Coming Soon: China's Navy Patrolling Off New York
https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/17414/china-navy-patrol-new-york#.YLDDftjZte4.twitter I would invoke the Monroe Doctrine, but Monroe owned slaves, so the Doctrine's been canceled.
Replication crisis - Articles with questionable results will get tested more, and thus cited more. This sounds almost tautological to me.
The replication crisis is real, but this article seemed like fear mongering. It should be considered a good thing if questionable results get questioned. From the Lockheed-Martin article: "That culture, according to Welp and Proudman, consists of traits—such as “rugged individualism,” “a can-do attitude,” “hard work,” “operating from principles,” and “striving towards success”—which are superficially positive but are “devastating” to women and minorities."
The CEO of Lockheed-Martin from 2013-2020 was a woman, Marilyn Hewson. Apparently, the company now believe that she must not have possessed such traits as hard work, operating from principles, etc, since these are only white male characteristics. And why would anyone want to do business with, or invest in, a company where these traits are devalued? re: Covid.
Masks facilitated viral transmission to the wearer, because the wearer of a mask constantly touched their face to adjust their mask. Hand to face transmission. People started wondering why mask mandated States had higher infections than no mask States. Was it the mask-wearing? Yeah. It was. This year the CDC proclaimed that this one virus, unlike all other viruses, could not survive on surfaces. No hand to face transmission possible. Of course they did. Prog Science! Who wants to tell the mask-wearers they invited the disease that so frightened them? The Surgeon General of the US told us this very thing, a year ago, but he is black, and Progressives must retain the privilege that 'blacks' are their pets, and are not to be taken seriously. |
