Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Why are many elites leftists? Because they can afford to be. They don't have to deal with the real world, they can hypothesize about their theoretical worlds all they want. Your average plumber is more concerned with paying the bills, about putting a roof over his family's head and food on the table and clothes on their backs, than about theoretical nonsense. He's too busy running his own life to worry about running everybody else's.
You forgot one of the defining characteristics of the wealthy elites: they're cheapskates, and exert extraordinary effort to get some poor schlub (like you or me) to pick up the check.
Portland Mayor finally notices people have been burning down his city. Of course he has. But ask him who these people are and I'm sure he'll tell you it's not BLM or Antifa, those people are peaceful protesters. No, the violent rioters are undoubtedly white supremacists, Nazis, and members of the KKK, you know, Trump supporters.
"Syracuse course questions whether academia should stop teaching Shakespeare. Syracuse University is offering a course in the English Department this Fall, entitled 'Why Shakespeare? Race in the Academy.'"
I caught the superb and starkly austere National Theatre production of Romeo and Juliet on PBS last Friday night and It struck me again how universal Shakespeare is. I've seen his works performed by all manner of casts and in every type of setting - and in three or four different languages. I believe the most interesting version I've seen was Macbeth in Swahili performed by a troupe of - were they Kenyan? - actors in tribal dress. It was stunningly effective; just like the rest of us, I doubt there is any African who would not personally find the themes expressed in the play rather close to the bone. But no! How dare a 16th-Century Englishman presume to write about the quintessential human condition we all share! There's little hope for any society that can't see through the playwright's "ethnicity" to understand that. The sooner the kids start playing outdoors, the sooner they become grounded in the realm of the real, physical, natural world. I don't think there's a more effective way to begin teaching a child the basics of critical thinking skills than by putting them outside to experience all of their senses and begin developing them.
“If you come home before the street lights turn on I’ve got a lot of jobs for you to do”……My Mom to 8 year old me, and yes I was, and remain, a huge pain in the ass.
When I moved to Europe 8 years ago I never thought, ever, that Europe would be the sane ones in the EU/US contest. Don’t trust my predictions. yup. I was digging caves under fallen trees in the forest around the place I grew up when I was 10.
Maybe not the smartest thing to do, but taught me something about structural integrity and how you get caveins when you try to make the place too big for the root system and soil to support. That and climbing trees, hiking in sand pits, building rabbit hutches and chicken pens using sharp tools and the only time I ended up in the ER was when a car hit me while I was standing on the side of the road waiting until it was safe to cross... It's envy. It's the fuel of the Left - envy of masculinity and the innovation it gives us (Feminism), envy of the wealthy (Marxism), and envy of people who put in the effort to be attractive (fat acceptance). Yes. Any Rand called that emotion"Hatred of the Good for being the Good."
Does reading fiction make us better people?
Reading fiction has been said to increase people’s empathy and compassion. But does the research really bear that out? https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190523-does-reading-fiction-make-us-better-people "White people are not hated. It's just in-fashion posturing."
Spoken by a lily white who has never lived in a supra majority minority neighborhood. One day you will wake up to a big surprise and it's coming fast. Spot on. Anyone who says whites are not hated is none to bright or very coddled….some overlap.
You are on fire today Bird Dog. Will take a few days to digest all this.
Re: Supreme court and high school students off campus.
We have just seen a demonstration of a similar situation. The interesting thing to add to this particular story (see link below) is that the white high school boy writes in a style typical of someone with an 8th or 9t grade level of composition skills. However, that was not taken into account. What this child said on facebook should have brought him into the principal's office. His comments and the use of FB to record those comments should have provided him with something like a 2 week suspension. Rather it brought him into the public square facing a well organized "protest" from a small minority group. Of course, in the preplanned audience the local press was present to report the event. This young man's life is ruined. All for what? Please note this demonstration was organized by teacher's during school hours. Also, it has been noted elsewhere that the young Indian/American woman sitting in the left of the picture with her face down has previously been arrested. ---------------------------------------------- There is little doubt the virus came from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The evidence is actually pretty overwhelming. The info I find most persuasive are the leaked Chinese health department maps and data showing the initial spread of the virus in Wuhan. The epicenter of the virus was not the wet market. It was the residential neighborhood right next to the Wuhan Institution of Virology. I would submit that Afghans are a nation without a nation state.
