Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re Getting Rich in the Diversity Marketplace - Ethnic studies consultants ride a wave of profits across America’s schools and corporate workplaces
Of course they are. Graft, rent seeking, acquiring power and influence is what this is all about. Who could have expected an heroic jury out of Minneapolis; I supposed that was the point of holding the trial there. The competent people, capable of rendering an honest verdict, would also be capable of calculating the risk to their families and livelihoods. Who can blame them for weeding themselves out of the jury.
Let's not forget the jury got doxxed by the media (CBS started it) right before they went into deliberations. Although the story did not specifically identify who they were, it gave enough information to signal to the jury members they could be fully doxxed if they did not come out with the "right" result.
I used to like Andrew McCarthy's thinking and looked forward to coming across his thought pieces, but his writing has become such a stalwart defender of the system I hardly bother anymore.
Pick almost any example: It seems like McCarthy's standards and ethics are so flexible they can be twisted into almost any pretzel, as long as it comes out to fit the narrative in favor of the institutions. By their collective in-actions and actions, the Judge failed his courtroom, and the two loudmouth politicians failed their oath of office. It's that simple. The jurors failed too, in my opinion, but they rose to the task and that is how our system works. Chauvin is a nasty piece of work by all accounts, but that doesn't make his trial a fair one - as McCarthy explicitly outlines, - and then excuses. A lot of journalists have parachuted into this outcome eager to tell us how confident we should be that justice has been served. The sad thing is, it might have been, and the only cost would have been a little less showboating. Back when OJ was on trial for murdering his ex-wife and her friend, I was willing to put aside my misgivings and say, "Well, the jury found him not guilty and I have to go along with that finding and trust that the system works and the jury came to the right decision." I don't think anybody trusts the systems any more. And for good reason. Once you've lost that trust, that's the end of a society, it's just every man for himself.
I think in this case, the jury made the worst possible decision (assuming the small subset of the evidence that I'm aware of is as determinative as I thought). An innocent police officer who was following his training will be in prison for the rest of his life - which may not be very long and the mob's influence has been validated and accepted. Expect this scenario to be played out over and over again (often with similar results) all over the country whenever the case involves a black person killed by a policeman. It will put fear in every day people, not just the jury, and the police - to the detriment of those every day people and especially to the detriment of every day black people..
Who was the better general, Grant or Lee?
They faced each other for the first time at The Battle of The Wilderness https://militaryhistorynow.com/2021/04/21/the-battle-of-the-wilderness-inside-the-lethal-first-encounter-of-grant-and-lee/ The South had the most talented leaders in the field, and I would rank Thomas ‘Stone Wall’ Jackson as the best general. His army literally ran circles around the Union commanders in the Shenandoah campaign. I give the edge to Grant, over Lee, only because playing defense is easier to coordinate than attacking. Lee didn’t fair to well when he invaded Pennsylvania.
That had to be a snide remark, from Lee, when he said, “McClellan by all odds.” With his bumbling around, McClellan, gave victory after victory to the South in the first two years of the war. The war would have been much shorter in duration, if McClellan had the skills of Grant or Lee. I've always thought of Grant as the better general, the prototypical American general. He might not have been as talented a tactician or a strategist, but he knew he was operating an 800 pound gorilla and knew when you're operating an 800 pound gorilla you don't have to worry about being talented. Grant may have been a butcher, but he could afford to be a butcher, he knew the Union was much stronger than the Confederacy and it was just a matter of slugging it out until the Confederacy collapsed. He didn't try to get fancy.

DEMOCRATS BRING A GUN TO A KNIFE FIGHT: And the NYT lies to us again. re China's Fishing Fleet Is Vacuuming the Oceans
As I have long said, China plays by China's rules. They will continue the practice of over fishing until someone makes them stop and who has the resources and the fortitude to do that? This also illustrates how differently China views the natural world compared to the West. It should also be noted that widespread famine is still within living memory in China. They take keeping everyone fed seriously. It has been over 200 years since the West has had a food shortage on such a scale. It makes for entirely different perspectives relative to the food supply. Hillsdale College's publication, Imprimus, has a pretty good explanation of Critical Race Theory.
https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/critical-race-theory-fight/ or just e-search 'hillsdale critical race theory'. It all boils down to post-modern, Marxist revolutionary excuses to tear it all down. People who are unhappy with their lives and blame the universe instead of themselves. Sorry. The link you have is the same essay that I mentioned, but a different publisher.

Critical race theory, bird dog, " I still do not know what it is "
I hope that was a really bad joke. Re: Syria
To be honest, I couldn't care less what happens to Syria. That horrible country could disappear tommorow, and it would be fine with me. What a cesspool. Be I still don't like it when the media shops around fake stories. Read this: Capitalizing on a longtime alliance with Syria, Iran is moving parts of its advanced missile and arms industry into pre-existing underground compounds to develop a sophisticated arsenal. Really? Is Iran going to make F-35 airplanes? Look: If the United States and Israel decide that it's time to give Syria and Iran an ass-whooping, then just go ahead and do it. Everybody is sick and tired of those assholes anyway. The stage is already set for a global shakedown. So I suppose it has to begin somewhere. And when those two crappy little despotic regimes are gone, it will be time to take care of the crappy big despotic regime. https://www.lewrockwell.com/lrc-blog/trump-china-taiwan/ |
