I have enjoyed Thompson's work and social commentary, but I've never mistaken it for journalism, not even when he was covering the Presidential campaign trail ('72) or the Roxanne Pulitzer trial. But I wonder if this social experiment of crafting and injecting phony 'facts' into the narrative because they 'sound like they ought to be true' is something that modern journalism has misguidedly embraced as the next step in the evolution of their craft.

If this nihilistic impulse derived from Thompson's work, it would explain a lot about the 'fake-but-accurate' media culture - and also illustrate how truly clueless modern journalists are about Thompson, if they think they're emulating his intent.

my take on Thompson's work was that it was attempting to show a Truth about society; the counter-culture was every bit as decrepit and decadent as the culture against which they were putatively rebelling; that without the social institutions of the bourgeoises there is nothing against which to revolt.

Ultimately the only answer he had was his drug-fueled nihilism.

What we're seeing in today's Left is just this: The generation of '67 has become the establishment. They have been rebelling so long that they have become that which they rebelled against: The certainties, the unquestionable premises, the manipulation of media to produce the propaganda of the system: All the things they decried in the 50's and 60's establishment has come to define them.

Myself, I think the "worst scandal of the pandemic" is that many (most?) Americans now have it firmly implanted in their brains that the government is sovereign over them and can control every aspect of their lives.

The best way to gauge whether TPTB (the powers that be) are being over-controlling is to try standing up to them. Not unpleasantly, but firmly. The old provocative saying “To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” that is mis-attributed to Voltaire and Orwell, but is apparently from white nationalist Kevin Alfred Strom, may result in a 'cancel' response. But one may stand up to authority in many different non-provocative ways. Be quietly disruptive and avoid accepting the status quo. Sometimes the 'authority' isn't an authority at all.

Literally within seconds at the Atlanta shooting press conference there was an effort by the press to emphasis that the shooter was white and the victims were Asian therefore racism.

But the shooting in Colorado is a mystery:
Police identify 21-year-old Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa as suspect in Boulder shooting.
There doesn't seem to be anything that can be identified as a possible reason for this shooting. Ahmad is reported to be a "resident" of Nevada. No motive. Nothing to see here, move along.

OK, I'm all for not jumping to conclusions and allowing the facts to come out. But what do you want to bet that the MSM will cover a lot of the facts up? Remember that the Atlanta shooter was immediately identified as a religious Christian but what about Ahmad? Watch what the media does not do and does not say.

The FBI resources are being used to arrest and harass Americans who have committed no crime but they allow terrorists like this guy to have free run of the country.

At this point I believe that the FBI is so compromised and corrupt that the best thing we could do is disband it and start all over again and this time put in some oversight and controls.

I hope the media coverage on this case is an improvement over past ones. It's disturbing to hear about another mass shooting being performed by an Islamic shooter that is a devout, mentally-disturbed immigrant that the FBI has been following, yet not failed to stop them.

I am sure that there is much more to the story that would help make sense of this, yet the coverage is usually so piss-poor and so biased against being potentially offensive to Islam, that it's impossible to get at the salient facts and understand why it happened, or better yet, see the FBI show that it understands something that it didn't before.

In the Dallas incident (where a mass shooting was prevented) the FBI literally pulled up to the scene just after the armed security guard took out the two terrorists, there to shoot up cartoonists. The agent was arrested on sight, on the assumption that he was involved. He was - he had the terrorists under surveillance, long term, and yet failed to put out the alert. Nothing ever came of it, publicly

In other words, the Biden administration is interfering in Israel’s upcoming election by strong-arming the Emiratis into publicly distancing themselves from Bibi.

Israel hasn't had an election in decades. The whole country runs on a system of voter fraud. The Unions, the Orthodox Jews, the Elderly; all of these groups negotiate a payoff months before the election occurs. This is happening because the American taxpayer, against his will, is giving many billions of dollars to Israel in "foreign aid". But that money isn't helping Israel, instead it's making corruption permanent. If Washington D.C. really wants to help Israel, then no more foreign aid should be given to an obviously corrupt system. The problem is that Washington is also corrupt. Criticizing another government would look ridiculous. Therefore, Washington needs to be cut-off from that giant fountain of play money. No more vote-buying. And no more military-racketeering. And no more "green" projects. And most importantly, no more Unions. The Navy could buy much better and cheaper ships from other companies. And the grocery stores could start competing again.
